The first impressions of important characters. 
The beginning of the film introduces the audience to the protagonist, Rex., an old, independent man living alone, with his dog, Dog.  
The audience is shown Rex's simple way of life and his black and white views of the world. 
Towards the end of Chapter 1 Rex is informed of his imminent death as a cause of his serious stomach cancer. Chapter 2, Rex hears of a law passing in the Northern Territory, allowing the use of euthanasia. Rex is then inspired to take control of the remaining time he has alive.

Dark night scene after Rex receives the news. His world is darker now and the people and colors so prominent in the scenes before are no longer there. This shows that he feels alone and that his future is bleak.
Zoom in on Rex's face during his call to Nicole.
