Ethnic/Cultural Conflicts: Uzbekistan

Due to the number of minorities in Uzbekistan, they have their fair share of ethnic/cultural conflict. Around 71% of the population is Uzbek, but the main minorities are Russians: 8%, Tajiks: 5%, Kazaks:4%, Tatars: 2.5%, and Karakalpaks: 2%(all percentages are estimates, not exact numbers). Because the majority of their population is Uzbek, they had colonial dominance. These minorities also caused major bias towards the Russian community in Uzbekistan, especially after the Soviet era. Russians there then began doing things such as rejecting parts of Uzbek culture and refusing to learn the local language. Territorial issues began later on because of lines that had previously been drawn by the Soviet Union, which ignored ethnic and linguistic boundaries. As if the Soviet era did not cause enough problems, the tension between countries during the time remained after the soviet union broke apart. This resulted in a good bit of conflict leading to violence and wars, including the civil war that occurred between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
