Connecting content to students' lives is also important. Having daily conversations with students, noticing when students are acting "different" and finding out why, and humor...super important. Families on the other hand need to understand that collaboration in education in the US is expected. Many families may come from countries where teachers are considered final authority and and collaboration isn't usual, so it is important to let them know it is welcomed.
