In the 1970s and 1980s, a unique and terrifying amusement park operated in Vernon Township, New Jersey. Action Park, which opened in 1978, became infamous as one of the most dangerous theme parks ever created. Unlike the carefully regulated parks we know today, Action Park operated with minimal safety oversight and a "figure it out yourself" attitude that led to countless injuries and several deaths.

The park was the brainchild of Gene Mulvihill, an entrepreneur who believed that guests should be responsible for their own safety. This philosophy resulted in attractions that would never pass modern safety inspections. The most notorious ride was the Cannonball Loop, a water slide that sent riders through a complete 360-degree loop. The slide was so dangerous that it operated for only one month before being permanently closed. Test dummies sent down the slide came back missing limbs, and the few brave souls who rode it often emerged with cuts and bruises.

Action Park's Alpine Slide was another death trap disguised as fun. Riders sat on small sleds and raced down a concrete track built into a mountainside. With no safety barriers and minimal braking systems, visitors regularly flew off the track, suffering severe injuries including broken bones and deep cuts from the rough concrete surface. The park's staff nicknamed it "The Graveyard."

The water attractions were equally hazardous. The Tidal Wave Pool, dubbed "The Grave Pool" by lifeguards, was so violent that it required up to 30 lifeguards on duty at once. The artificial waves were so powerful that they could knock grown adults unconscious, and drownings occurred regularly. The park's management seemed more concerned with profits than safety, often reopening attractions immediately after accidents.

What made Action Park particularly dangerous was its lack of proper maintenance and training. Many rides were built by unqualified contractors, and teenage employees operated complex machinery with little supervision. The park's insurance costs were astronomical – at one point, they were paying over $70,000 per year just for liability coverage.

Despite its reputation, Action Park remained popular throughout the 1980s. Teenagers flocked there for the adrenaline rush and the bragging rights that came with surviving its attractions. The park's marketing actually embraced its dangerous reputation, with slogans like "There's nothing in the world like Action Park!"

By the mid-1990s, mounting lawsuits and increased government regulation forced significant changes. The park briefly reopened under new management with improved safety measures, but it never recaptured its original chaotic spirit. Action Park finally closed permanently in 1996, leaving behind a legacy as a cautionary tale about the importance of safety regulations in amusement parks.

Today, Action Park serves as a reminder of how quickly excitement can turn deadly when proper safety measures are ignored. Modern theme parks undergo rigorous testing and inspection, largely as a result of disasters like those that occurred at Action Park. While the park may be gone, its stories continue to fascinate people who wonder how such a dangerous place was ever allowed to operate.
