A boy was pushed in my office, 
not a moment too soon.

His eyes were unfocused and wild,

Which was a little too much 
for a child.

I sat his mom 
and him 
on two chairs

His mother 
had a lot of info to share

He couldn’t sit still
 and struggled to pay attention 

And didn’t think 
before any of his actions

He lost an awful lot of things 
and misplaced some others

Also he was 
a bit of a bother

This caused him 
to get expelled,

From a few schools
 I could tell

I talked to his mom 
for some time,

While observing her son’s activity

And I heard her sigh.

She thought it was her fault,

Though it most certainly was not

And she had done 
the best she could

I had never seen such good parenting in all motherhood 

I settled her son 
down to talk

And he seemed
 to be in two places at once

More in his fantasy world
then the present one

He insisted he was fine
and I was wasting my time 
trying to help

But his expression and hands 
told me something else

His hands were always tapping his chair 

He didn't seem to notice
 or care.

And his eyes
as I say again

Did seem wild 
and sparkled like a gem

He interrupted me while I talked

And his legs swung
like he was on a walk.

After I finished
I doubt he was listening
 which for now was fine

The bells in my head 
were ringing as loud as chimes.

It was likely he had ADHD
combined

I was not a trained professional
so I wrote a letter to my friend

Since he specialized in my patient’s case.

I told his mother my suspicions
 and asked if she and him were okay

She was relieved
and was eager to see my friend 

So she booked 
an appointment 

And that’s 
the end

I patiently sat there 
as the girl’s father started to talk

I nodded and listened
 like he was my boss 

He told me his daughter
 Katie had trouble reading and writing

This was getting a bit familiar 

I asked Katie few questions
whilst she spoke, 

I noticed that she took 

A few long breaths 
while she told me her story

She had some trouble
 with some words' meanings.

And some letters seem to be leaning 

She didn’t do good
 in some certain subjects

And her writing wasn’t 
at all close to perfect

She mispronounced words
 like lawn mower for mawn lower

Her father stated 
that she started speaking much later
 than others

Then he asked
 did she get this from her mother?

Their mother
seemed to have the same problem too, 

And got diagnosed 
with dyslexia at the age 22

If I have to add
 dyslexia is genetic 

But doesn’t really make you less strategic  

To make sure
 I did a brain scan,

I made her read book

It was a test
 which she took

While she read 
 And I studied the screen

Her logical side
 did not seem too keen

To light up showing me that it was working 

I looked at her
she looked close to grieving 

Now I knew

And I told her the news

She sat in the floor 
and started to cry
which I could understand,

But it didn’t make her dumb

And I offered her my hand

I sat her back
and gave her a toy crown

Then told her dyslexia’s 
ups and downs

They tend to think
 outside the box

And can be as smart
 as a fox

They are very creative 

Funny and intelligent 

Albert Einstein 
was likely to have it

And he had a whole lot of talents!

I said Dyslexia 
is a lifelong condition

But Katie didn’t seem to despair 

She even jumped in excitement

Like a wild little hare. 

I told her father
 and he was not shocked 

“So does that mean
 she’ll be smarter than Sherlock?”

I was thrilled at his curiosity 
and acceptance 

Some parents 
called their kids dumb 

Then yell at them
 in disappointment

After it was done 
I contacted her teacher

And told her everything 

But she said,
 “ it’s just a myth so they can stop learning!” 

I informed Katie’s father
 and he was pissed

He said “ this teaching 
should be missed.”
He insisted

We decided to transferred her
 to a special school

Which Katie thought
was very cool

So she’s happy
 that’s all I can say

Now I need 
my sleep for the day.
