     -Ruhollah Khomeini, a former professor of philosophy, united many secular intellects who opposed the shah.

     -protests against the shah led by opposition groups were met with torture and harassment from  the Pahlavi rulers.

     -Instead of limiting the authority of Shah, the secular intellects realized that they could overthrow the Shah with the help of the Ulama.
