John Lennon Wall

Today on our city tour of Prague, we stopped at the famous John Lennon Wall. Surprisingly, the wall has no affiliation with John Lennon himself; however, since the 1980s, the wall has been covered with John Lennon lyrics and images. The wall allows the people to express themselves artistically in ways that were once restricted under the communist regime. Today, visitors are able to add their own art to the already hundreds of existing layers of the freedom and expression.

We stopped by the public library in Prague today and immediately saw the well of knowledge. This is a stack of books that lead all the way up to the ceiling, but has a gap in the center that slightly resembles a teardrop. These books are the old books that the city was ready to get rid of, but did not just want to throw away. I personally love that these books were not just thrown away, but that they were kept for people to see.

Strahov Monastery Library:I found the visit to the Strahov Monastery library to be an amazing experience, as it is incredible for so many books to create such an enormous aggregate of knowledge in one place. First with the invention of the printing press and now with the internet, we take the quick spread of information for granted, but in the time during which most of the books in the library were written, their contents were unique, making the library an unsurpassed basis for research and learning. The amount of care put into the creation and keeping of each individual volume shows the indispensable importance of compiling ideas to lead to new thinking and develop human society. The practice of creating huge collections of books and knowledge finds its antithesis in the Nazi book burnings, which destroyed ideas deemed unfavorable to the Reich, adding to the hatred and lack of knowledge that contributed to the Holocaust. In the future, we must be sure to preserve such treasures as the Prague library as well as all other compilations of knowledge that help unite and develop human thinking.

Just earlier this morning, my group and I had the opportunity to have a tour of a library that is unlike any other. This beautiful, decorative library is filled with over 40,000 books that mainly touch upon the religion aspect during the 14th century. The books included within the library are roofed with a very detailed and ornate illustration that delivers a hidden message. Each section within the ceiling provides a different meaning, but they all relate to one another: Human and their behaviors and their connection to God.

Today while in the castle, we learned about the famed Saint John, a highly revered saint in Czech culture. The story surrounding this saint is that after receiving an alarming confession from the Queen, he informed the King but refused to share it. As a consequence, he had his tongue cut off and he and the tongue were thrown into the river. This statue of Saint John stands on the bridge above the Charles River for people to rub for luck after his tongue was discovered underneath-a symbol of Czech culture.

Today we visited in the Cathedral of St. Vitus that was located in the center in of Prauge, Czech Republic. This building was buildint in 929 and it tooks 600 years to build. It made of various stones that were set to on top of each other like legos blocks with edges on top. With out the discovery of cement and the lack of technology during the period, the catheral stands today because of it's architectural work of balance in every corner stone of the building. Each detail of the architecture plays a big role of the catherals foundation. As we entered the church, you can see many huge windows made out of painted glass which showed many stories including, Baptism. In addition, many status of saints were in each conor of the catheral and memorials of the cardinal and airmen; as well as the silver tomb of a tongue of the confessor is buried. The purpose of the inner-structure of the church was for when the people enter, you will covered in a religious atmosphere.
- Colin Angelitud

One of the most fascinating parts of library we visited in Prague was this book rotator. It was invented in the library and used by the scholars who needed to have multiple books open at one time for research and discovery. Instead of having a pile of books in front of them, this allowed them to be more organized and thus more efficient during the period of the enlightenment.

In the Czech Republic we visited a church where kings were buried. From the outside the church had so many various details. It was a gothic style church that took 600 yrs to build. It is so beautiful inside as sun shine through painted glass. At the top we see and learn how the church is being supported. Instead the support is all on the outside. In the back of the church you get to see the kings resting place. One of the kings have only a tongue that remains. In is held in this beautiful all silver tomb. This church shoes how the atmosphere was in the Middle Ages.

This cross on Charles Bridge combines two religions that have disputes over the truth behind this man. According to Mr. Barmore, the Jews believed that this man is not the messiah, while Catholics believe he is. The usage of the two languages shows how these two can have different ideals with the same man, or the same principle.

Today we visited Strahov Library. This library has books dating back thousands of years. We were actually able to walk around the library and see books older than the Czech Republic itself. This library was significant as it showed that all knowledge should be shared with others and that in this age where we find all our information online books are still important.
