Collins had his identity stolen during the Target Data Breach. Collins wasn’t careless with his information — quite the opposite. He has worked in law enforcement in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 25 years. He’s even investigated cases like his own so he took numerous precautions. Unfortunately, he ended up a victim anyway.

Later on she realized the the number was in fact legit and that her credit history was being used and overridden by someone else. Having been able to catch it early she caught the 50+ attempted accounts opened.

However, when she came home and found Samantha with her friend Alice Lipski she didn't think much of it.
Well it turns out that Alice is an expert identity thief and a meth addict. She went through all of Helen's mail and signed up for multiple credit cards and even signed up for a credit monitoring service so she could view Helen’s entire credit history.
She was finally caught after forgetting her purse at Macy’s, and charged with ten counts of identity theft; her and her friends had stolen nearly $1 million using the information of other people.

Axton Betz-Hamilton's parents had been victims of identity theft 20 years prior. So assuming the same person who had stolen her parents identities had stolen hers as well when she was younger wasn't a bad prediction. Soon after her mother's death the truth later surfaced showing that Betz-Hamiliton's mother was the one responsible for over 20 years of fraud. Her mother has stolen her identity, and her father's, as well as compromising $1,500 out of her grandfather. As shocking as it may seem that some people are robbed by their own family, this story is not uncommon in identity theft cases.

Nakeisha Hall spent most of her career with the IRS working in Taxpayer Advocate Services, helping individuals who had been victims of tax fraud. When the ironic reality was that she was actually stealing their identities from right under their noses. From 2008-2011 she used IRS computers to access names, birth dates, and social security numbers. Using these records to file fraudulent tax returns and refunds on debit cards. Overall in the amount of time she was doing this she stole over $400,000 which was nothing compared to the $1 million she tried to steal.

The aftermath of becoming a victim to identity theft isn't very easy it can be messy and can take time to clean up. Krebs first placed a fraud alert on her credit reports and eventually froze them.
