In her career, Kahlo created 143 paintings out of which 55 are self-portraits. Kahlo said "I often paint myself because I am often alone and because I am the subject I know best." Her self portraits often include interpretations of physical and psychological wounds. Kahlo's self-portraits are considered among the finest ever created. Her most famous self-portrait is perhaps "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird."

Kahlo was considered one of Mexico's greatest artist who began painting mostly self-portraits after she was severely injured in a bus accident. One of her most famous paintings was "The Two Fridas." Like "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird," The Two Fridas was painted in response to Kahlo's separation from Rivera. In this piece Kahlo explores 2 sides of herself. On the left, she depicts herself as a broken-hearted woman clad in a traditionally European gown. On the right, her heart is whole, and she is wearing a modern Mexican dress-a style she adopted while married to Rivera.
