Personally I think that on the one hand there is the competence of a teacher in his own field of teaching, on the other his ability to transmit knowledge using effective methodologies that foster and facilitate learning.
Both of these aspects are necessary for today's schools to have the necessary resources to prepare pupils for future studies or for life.
Teachers who are less familiar with IT tools must be encouraged to invest in their own technological training, as it is no longer possible to disregard IT skills.

I'm directly involved in motivating my fellow teachers about using technology as a powerful tool to involve and motivate students, whatever the taught subject. That's why I fully agree with Tuula: it's of paramount importance, we all agree about it, but it's also a main challenge - and not an easy one. I think less advanced technology enhanced teachers shouldn't be scared with great amounts of complicated tools and long training courses. Training could consist simply in observing a lesson in another class and seeing how much students are motivated, involved and happy with - maybe - a very simple tool like a "wheeldecide" on the IWB. Students learn better if they have fun and technology can help a lot in having fun!

Mrs. Nousiainen expressed in very clear words the obvious priority or what should be the main priority - to motivate teachers to train , in order to become more advanced in the use of ICT and TET-SAT. Somehow all teachers will have to understand that the future involves technology , modern teaching, adapted to our new society and to our students skills. What will be the big challenge is the way they will be convinced of the necessity and determined to act themselves in that direction, without constraint or fear.

I agree with the statement that one of the challenges is to motivate teachers with less ICT skills to join self-assessment and professional development projects in the area. The challenge of motivating these teachers, in my view, implies: a) creating better conditions in schools; if the teacher has the perception that things are not going to go well (there are few resources, the equipment fails ...), then the teacher will not invest hours of work and then have to bail out of plan B (this was the reason why, despite having trained and trained teachers, never invested in the production of classroom materials for multimedia interactive whiteboards); b) create leading teams within schools that combine knowledge of technological means with solid knowledge and experience in pedagogy and teaching methodology (teaching a teacher to use the Socrative, for example, without making him reflect on the pedagogical bases, without showing him model examples and without highlighting relevance to their specific disciplines, is useless work); c) implement school policies so that there is the possibility of exchange of experiences, of materials and there is no tension between what a teacher implements in a classroom and another teacher in another classroom.

I agree, to motivate less technological tachers is utterly important. The thing is that we all live in a digital society so, maybe the challenge is less hard as one might think. It is more a question of awareness (what the digital tools we can use in pedagogy are) than a question of digital literacy, to say.

I agree with Tuula, motivation is not only a big challenge for our students, but as school should be a community where we work together for the benefit of our students, the condivision of good practices and the involvement of all teacher in a policy of technology enhanced teaching should be the big aim of the school. More training is not enough , I would suggest working together , observing other teachers' work , team work ...

I have immediately realized the difficulty Tuula has talked about: how to motivate teachers who need more training. I think that we can't rely on self-motivation on those cases, at least not immediately, but using TET-SAT could be compulsory (at least once) and then our Ministry of Education could ask about our results and a plan of improvement.
Cristina Annicchiarico

Younger teachers are certainly more prepared and motivated, but in my opinion the problem is only related to too many extra-school commitments; if the priority is updating in the tecnologies all the courses offered in schools should concern the tic. furthermore, these courses should then include phases of tutoring in the classroom involving the parents.

It's the heart of the matter. In Italy wde have another problem: a lot of old teachers don't know English language, so it's difficoult to motivate them to improve.
Virginia Muntean, Romania

Flavia, Italy

I totally agree with Tuula. Before I enrolled this course, I also had worries about TET-SAT like whether I am competent enough to use ICT for TET-SAT or not and nobody supported me because they know nothing about TET-SAT or why this is necessary. We just need motivation to use it. I think there should be constant conferences about how to use ICT properly in the classroom or how to engage students in.
Elisa, Venice, Italy

I think Tuula is right. I also believe that challenges are always difficult because they imply efforts, duties, responsibilities and involvement. Motivation is the key to foster more interest in the use of ICT. Motivation may come from within (we feel the need to improve and develop); it may also come from outside, from the context we are working in, from our colleagues, from our headteacher ...

Not all teachers are inclined to use technology, perhaps because they do not consider it important, so I think it should be the head teacher to offer ITC training courses mandatory for all school teachers. In this way all teachers would have greater possibility to know and apply in their teaching these effective and innovative means for learning.

I fully agree with the ideas expressed by Tuula Nousiainen.

It's true. The biggest problem to face is to make the fear of technology overcome to the less competent teachers. I am so convinced of it that I try to stimulate my colleagues' curiosity and help them when they have difficulty

I agree with Tuula because that 's the answer I gave above as an idea that could be taken further.

The key word here is MOTIVATION: if you feel motivated, you are likely to succeed in doing what you feel is useful for you. The tech-competent teacher of the school should try to engage colleagues in attending seminars about the use of ICT to improve their methodologies, and he/she should be available when they need help. This is the first step, let's hope for the best.

I think this can be stimulating for teachers ... stimulating for the knowledge of ICT but a valuable help in improving their approach with students... use the 3.0 classes more and more

This means, prior to the usage of TET SAT there should be a kind of preliminary programmes to identify the teacher's level. Then we should have a target level for the teacher to achieve. The first problems come when you address less "technological" teachers. It is really hard to involve them and I have been trying to do so for more that five years with poor results.
Sometimes I think that we should use the same strategies as the ones we use for demotivated students, a step by step approach making the "vintage" teachers fall in love with technology. However this can only take place if the school has an excellent Animatore Digitale dedicated to the literacy of the less "technological" colleagues. A constant formation should take place and TET SAT is for sure the most important tool to use and a positive starting point

I think it is useful to motivate teachers in the use of ICT. The TET SAT could be a really good tool to render teachers aware about their use and knowledge of ICT. Actually not all teachers have a constant approach to the tools and use them fully integrated in their teaching. I believe that each headmaster should render the test compulsory, each teacher should do the test and according to the obtained results, he/she should empower his/her weakness. Nevertheless e must also consider that in our schools there are still teachers who are reluctant in the use of digital tools so it is really very difficult to convince and motivate them.

It is happening with the use of technology in personal life (today, it's rare to find people who don't have a mobile phone, a computer, a facebook profile, etc.), and I guess it will happen in education too.
Encouraging the technology-enhanced teaching in the formation of new teachers at the university would probably help a lot, because if new teachers get to the schools with this spirit and teachers who are already used to it keep using it, teachers who refuse to use it can see the good results and, maybe, change their minds. That's a progressive work. Conferences, lectures in the schools, meetings... All of these things can also be used as some publicity to this new subject that is TET.

I think that less competent collegues need to see some advantage in investing in ICT. If they see that other teachers are enthusiastic about technology and that it really helps the learning process, then they will be more likely to engage in ICT tools and to take the TET-SAT,

Giovanna, ItalyI think that every teacher needs to be motivated by the use of technology.Motivation will have to be an increase in the sharing of new experiences and practical application of ICT and information / training for teachers with less ICT use. Students are more and more intersted in technology. They are already familiar with the use of technology so teachers should be constantly seeking to improve their teaching methodologies.
