Family History

My family history is a bit chaotic. Even worse, I only have medical history for the paternal side of my family. My mother was adopted at birth, and knows next to nothing about her birth parents. So while I know little about the maternal side of my family, my mom has been relatively healthy her entire life. It helps a bit that I know an awful lot about the paternal side...but it isn't pretty. It is rife with heart disease, a number of cancers including, but not limited to lung and melanoma, poor mental health, and more than a few strokes.

Predisposition & Risk Factors

Knowing what I do about my family history, and then using the tool to assess my risk factors, I discovered that my risk of having a stroke is much less than i thought it would be. Given my family history I have always considered it to be something I needed to watch out for, but after using the tool to assess my risk, I was proved wrong.

I was, however, right in my prediction that my risk for melanoma would be incredibly high. My dad had melanoma and I am very fair skinned like him, and have additional characteristics that make me vulnerable to melanoma such as: numerous moles/freckles, fair skin, burn easily, etc. Melanoma is definitely something I will be paying close attention to moving forward.

My final two assessments were for uterine cancer and osteoporosis. I scored a low risk on both. I wasn't very surprised at this. Neither cancer runs in my family, and I don't have many of the risk factors that contribute to them.

Looking at the four diseases I assessed with the tool, there isn't much I can do to lower my risk of stroke, uterine cancer, or osteoporosis as I am already at an incredibly low risk for any of the three. However, I have an incredibly high chance of melanoma. As stated, my dad had it, and we share many of the same characteristics that make us a target for melanoma such as: fair skin that burns easily, numerous freckles and moles, etc. To avoid this, I am very intentional about wearing sunscreen when I am outdoors. I take care of my skin, and thoroughly check my skin for any sign of abnormalities.

After using the tool to assess my risk for melanoma I discovered that the odds are not in my favor. I have a very high chance of melanoma at some point in my life. Being sure that I am protecting my skin in the sun is one of the only things I can do to prevent it. By using sunscreen, staying in the shade, and wearing protective clothing while outside are a few ways that I can prevent melanoma.
