Ralph Ellison was born in 1913 in Oklahoma City. His father named him after Ralph Waldo Emerson, hoping he would become a poet. Ellison attended the Tuskegee Institute, where he studied music. However, he moved to New York City and met writers Richard Wright and Langston Hughes, who encouraged him to try writing. This led to the creation of his most famous work, "Invisible Man."

This quote represents the scene of IM and his classmates were forced to fight each other blindfolded. Not only were they physically blindfolded, but it represented their metaphorical blindness towards the fact that the white men were manipulating them and using them as entertainment.

IM carries it around, hoping it will open doors for him, but instead, it only serves as a reminder of his "invisibility"
