It is the "Oh, Wow, You did that!" factor then the "I know who made the Warrenton Pier" factor. It gives me bragging rights.  I will be able to tell my students that they can make something important for their community. 
I liked the crazy little experiment on estimating. It was not something I could do,  but it was fun to see the process and to make a wild attempt. It helped me see the complexity of the process.
