The years before the walkabout, their adults prepare them for this journey. For example under the jouney they are going on a very long hike, up to 1000 miles. They also have to catch fish and hunt.

In many communities, Rumspringa is a period when some Amish youth, boys more than girls, experience greater freedom. They are no longer under the control of their parents on weekends. 
Traditional youth activities include volleyball, swimming, ice skating, picnics, hiking, and large outdoor parties. The most typical gatherings are singings. Groups meet in a home and sing German hymns and English gospel songs for several hours and afterwards eat food.

The women get their teeth sharpen because they believe this makes them beautiful. The elderly Mentawai women say if a women does not get her teeth sharpened she shall be considered ugly and if she is ugly then her soul is ugly.
