He was a potential harm to himself and to others (students and teachers). The teacher first tried removing him from the room, ended up putting him in "hold" and eventually moved him to the padded room in the school. The principal supervised the student in the room by standing in the doorway of the space monitoring the student until he calmed down. The parents/grandparents made a really big deal out of the way the event was handled. When the principal finally arrived, they witnessed the TA on top of the student restraining him. The TA was trained in CPI, however his certification had expired the previous school year. The TA had documentation of e-mails requesting for his certification to be updated and to attend the one day training. The teacher in that classroom, who had never been trained in CPI, reported the incident to the principal and the parent of the child, and stated that maybe the TA went to far. Everyone involved, or that witnessed the situation, wrote a statement as to what happened. Because the student had already graduated when it came to light, the student was no longer a student of the teacher and the situation had to be handled very carefully. When the principal arrived to try and dissolve the situation, the parent was yelling and cussing at the principal. The teacher submitted another request that had a different combination of leave, but was for the same days. Due to the days of sick leave being different, the principal had some concerns that the employee was not taking them appropriately. The principal notified the employee in writing that sick days must adhere to school, district, and state attendance policies.
