Also, in attendance were Representatives from the office of Senator Chris Coons and Senator Tom Carper.

Maureen Whalen who was the Keynote speaker also, had the honor of presenting the prestigious State Director of Adult Education Scholarship to Hermoini Caballero. This scholarship is given to an eligible applicant who wishes to pursue a post-secondary education.  

Beginning July 11 to August 17, 2023, Polytech Adult Education is sponsoring a Summer Literacy Camp for children of parents attending ESL summer classes for adults prior to our annual Adult Education Family Literacy week held in September. Children will be provide breakfast and participate in fun age-appropriate educational activities, explore science, solve mysteries, and create art projects.  There was a tremendous turnout for the beginning of our literacy summer camp and we looking for a fun filled ESL community over the summer.

AEFL week planning has been on-going.  In addition to Lucas's story, I'll be collecting stories from AE throughout Northwest Indiana and recruiting more COABE members.  Our awesome State Director and staff have press releases and social media posts ready to go.  My new and super amazing Program Director is currently engaging local mayors and officials for AEFL week proclamations.
 
During AEFL week I will advocate on Wednesday 9/20 for local programs including mine at a Community Partner's Fair with COABE's Adult Learner of the Year.  Immediately afterward, I will catch a flight to DC to continue advocacy efforts with Congressman Mrvan (Indiana House District #1.)  I reside in his district with 60,000+ neighbors lacking HS completion.  I initiated communication with Mrvan in July.  I've been actively communicating with his Director of Operations and Education Staffer since earlier this month.  I hope I'm not jinxing myself by sharing due to appointment still not being set.   His office sent me an update yesterday that they'll finalize time soon.  šŸ¤žšŸ¼

Looking forward to seeing some fellow fellows and other COABE members on "the Hill."

The Literacy Council of Southwest Louisiana held its annual Literacy Awareness Day at the local mall where free books were given to the first 100 kids. Many programs are doing social media posts. WorkReady U has created a Louisiana AEFL Kit with resources programs can use for social media posts. I love the state and parish infographics on adult learning they created for use by all programs. Some programs are also doing a social media takeover where other organizations agree to support AEFL week by giving up their social media to AEFL posts this entire week.

Next week, WorkReady U is hosting its first ever Adult Learning Summit at the pre-conference of the Louisiana Community and Technical Colleges (LCTCS) conference. It will be a full day event providing awareness of adult education and literacy services and building partnerships. We discussed the status of Adult Education in New York and the importance of WIOA. Senator Schumer is dedicated to ensuring the advancement of Adult Education in the United States. Last night we had our first ever Family Fun Night celebrating Adult Education and Family literacy week!  Thank you to our partners:  Cowley College admissions, Cowley College Library, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cowley County, RCB Bank, Cowley College Cheerleaders, Tank the Tiger and the Ark City Public Library.
Another big thank you to Cowley college's Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Bates for reading to the children at the event.
Students in our program and their family played cornhole, ladder toss, participated in a book walk, Listened to a story, pictures with Cowley college cheerleaders and Tank the Tiger, and finally enjoyed dinner together.  Everyone left the event with LOTS of BOOKS

They spoke with classes about their work and who they represent and received a tour of our campus.


We also hosted an AEL potluck/picnic for all of our amazing staff and price of admission was donating children's books to distribute to some of our ELL students to work on taking their English skills home to their children by reading them books in English.


We continue to reach out to legislation for funding and communicate regularly with our representatives.
