4. Why study Marketing ?

Purpose: For students to understand the difficulty of strategic planning without frameworks to facilitate the process.

Format: This activity can be facilitated in both a classroom and an online environment. Instructions for how to facilitate the activity in the classroom and online are provided below.

Classroom Format: Small group discussion, then class presentations (Estimated Time: 20–40 minutes).

1.      After dividing into groups of three or four students, choose a large company, such as Facebook, Apple, Ford, or another well-known brand. You may want to assign a company to each group to ensure there is no overlap.

2.     Groups should put themselves in the role of company executives who are putting together a 3- to 5-year strategic plan. The first step is to identify what the company is doing well and what it’s not doing so well. Students should be specific about each of these.

3.     Students should then develop three strategic recommendations for the company in terms of markets or products it should pursue and those it should possibly phase out.

4.    Once students have discussed the strategic position of their company and created three strategic recommendations, have each group present their findings to the class.

10.Design a brief marketing campaign for a product or service that highlights the company's ethical values and commitment to social responsibility. What key elements would you include in this campaign?

All groups need to submit a hard copy of the presentation from the last class along with the rubric. Each rubric (group presentation) must include the names of the group members and be submitted by 23/10/2024 (class session).

2.     Explain that although baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are aging, they see themselves as physically active and intellectually curious.

3.     Ask each group to choose one of the following organizations and determine how they would pitch this organization’s product(s) to baby boomers: Anytime Fitness gyms, McDonald’s, Target, State Farm Insurance, or Holland America Line cruises.

4.    Have each group develop a short commercial utilizing their ideas on marketing to baby boomers, which they should perform in front of the class.

1.      Divide the class into groups of four or five. 

2.     Ask each group to think of a company of their choice that would like to expand its operation in a foreign country. Encourage groups to choose a smaller organization, perhaps something locally or regionally known, that is not already a dominant multinational.

3.     Have groups brainstorm factors the company would have to consider in preparing to move into the new market. Groups should come up with at least five significant factors.

4.    Invite each group to present their findings to the class.
