Session learning outcomes:

At the end of the session, students will be able to:
1. Illustrate the anatomy of the skin
2. Analyse the effect of Vitamin A on the skin
3. Discuss the advantages of vitamin A for various skin types

Materials needed:
Laptops (email was sent the day before to remind students to bring their laptops and make sure they were charged. Wifi is available on college grounds and all students have access)
Pencils
Blank paper

The lecturer, with the use of a digital whiteboard, will open the lesson with an image of the anatomy of the skin (please see image above)

Begin by asking what students know about the image they are looking at. Do they know the functions of each or any layer? Ask higher-order questions such as: why would you think it is important to understand our skin?
Go on to explain the function of these three layers of skin. Continue asking higher order questions to get students thinking. Questions such as :Why would you think it is important to take care of your skin? 

Play a video with a voiceover on how to draw the top three layers of the skin.

Once video is finished, students will be asked to illustrate the skin individually. They will have been given a pencil and paper at the beginning of the class.

They are asked to go online (using their laptops) and discover two functions of the top three layers of our skin. 

Two functions of the Dermis
Two Functions of the  Epidermis 
Two functions of Subcutaneous tissue

The lecturer will make use of the digital whiteboard with instructions on the task and a Padlet hyperlink has been emailed to all students. 

They can use padlet to create a project together and then share their findings with one another. The lecturer will be walking around the classroom assessing students as they work. The focus is to see how students collaborate together and create a Padlet with their findings. Students are all familiar with Padlet and have used it in class previously.

1. Recycle vitamins c, e, and d in our skin
2. Natural antioxidant - protects against sun damage, ageing, and pigmentation
3. Increase collagen production - great for anti ageing
4. Smooths line and wrinkles
5. Repairs cell damage caused from extrinsic factors - sun/pollution 
6. Regulate oil production - great for acne prone skin
7. Minimises pore size - prevents blackheads forming
8. Teaches skin how to hydrate itself
9. Creates a protective barrier to lock that hydration in
10. Repairs pigmentation - can create a more even skin tone


Students were given a handout addressing skin types at the beginning of class. They can use this handout as a base for a discussion on skin types. Throughout this discussing, they will be instructed to start linking the benefits of Vitamin A to different skin types. They will be asked to think personally, what vitamin A benefits would match there own skin type.

Using the previous handout, students can reflect on what we discussed about vitamin A's benefits. 
A second handout with skin types will be given to them.
Students can use this handout to write one benefit of using Vitamin A on each skin type.
For example, we now know that vitamin A regulates oil production, therefore this means oily skin types will benefit from the use of Vitamin A.

Evaluation Form :

At the end of the quiz, they will have the opportunity to write down two points they were unclear on and leave them with the tutor. Will discuss this in the next lesson.
