I hope that this can be a place to share some things that have worked for you. This can be a great resource so that you are sharing ideas and not inventing new ones every time we have Crew. I also want to give permission that if you want to pair your students and have them read to each other, this is ok too. Every Crew does not have to be a game or big show.

We will give them back to the kids this week. This is something everyone could take with them and use.

I just used a lot of random materials from my classroom (tissue paper, popsicle sticks, stickers, glue, pipe cleaners, cups, etc. ) and had the students work in teams to make something with the materials. They loved it and it was fun to see what they came up with!

Within the small groups they created a part to the bigger castle, and at the end they brought their "parts" to the bigger castle. They had fun working together in their small groups, and then seeing their efforts in the big castle. Everyone loved Legos!

The people who also like it raise their hands, and the person throws the ball to one of them while holding the other end of the yarn. We continued with each person saying something they liked and then throwing the ball of yarn to someone who also liked it. In the end, everyone is connected with a giant spider web. If we would have had time, I would have them go backwards to unravel the web trying to remember what each person liked.

We completed an activity to try and learn each others names as well as learn more about each other. Each student was given a sticky note and a pencil. We went around the circle and each child said their name as well as something about themselves they liked (an activity, food, etc.), Students then wrote it on the sticky note. (This gave the upper grade kids opportunities to help the younger kids.) In the second part of the activity I pulled the sticky notes out of the container and students had to remember who said what as well as give their name. Students often remembered who said what, but still had some difficulty with their names. I kept the sticky notes so that we can try it again the next time we meet.

For Uhey's crew today, we did a Classmate Scavenger Hunt:
Provide each student with two index cards. Ask each student to write a brief description of his or her physical characteristics on one index card and his or her name on the other. Physical characteristics usually do not include clothing, but if you teach the primary grades, you might allow students to include clothing in their descriptions. Put all the physical characteristic index cards in a shoe box, mix them up, and distribute one card to each student, making sure that no student gets his or her own card. Give students ten minutes to search for the person who fits the description on the card they hold. There is no talking during this activity, but students can walk around the room. At the end of the activity, tell students to write on the card the name of the student who best matches the description. Then have students share their results. How many students guessed correctly?
The only problem was that we ran out of time to see how many students guessed correctly, so that part might be revealed at the next Crew.
