Within the small groups they created a part to the bigger castle, and at the end they brought their "parts" to the bigger castle. The first person says something that they like. The people who also like it raise their hands, and the person throws the ball to one of them while holding the other end of the yarn. We continued with each person saying something they liked and then throwing the ball of yarn to someone who also liked it. In the end, everyone is connected with a giant spider web. Each student was given a sticky note and a pencil. We went around the circle and each child said their name as well as something about themselves they liked (an activity, food, etc.), Students then wrote it on the sticky note. (This gave the upper grade kids opportunities to help the younger kids.) In the second part of the activity I pulled the sticky notes out of the container and students had to remember who said what as well as give their name. Students often remembered who said what, but still had some difficulty with their names. The pair got their photograph taken together. Then they wrote and drew things they both liked on a paper titled "Lil' Bro, Big Bro" or "Lil' Sis, Big Sis." I'm compiling the photographs and favorites pages into a book for each child so we can learn names and get to know one another.

Provide each student with two index cards. Ask each student to write a brief description of his or her physical characteristics on one index card and his or her name on the other. Physical characteristics usually do not include clothing, but if you teach the primary grades, you might allow students to include clothing in their descriptions. Put all the physical characteristic index cards in a shoe box, mix them up, and distribute one card to each student, making sure that no student gets his or her own card. Give students ten minutes to search for the person who fits the description on the card they hold. There is no talking during this activity, but students can walk around the room. At the end of the activity, tell students to write on the card the name of the student who best matches the description. Then have students share their results. How many students guessed correctly?
