The Maine Coon cat is native to Maine, and the origins of the breed are surrounded by mystery. The most likely theory is that Maine Coons originated from a cross between short-haired domestic cats and long-haired cats brought to the United States by European sailors or the Vikings in the early 18th century.

A popular legend claims that Maine Coons are descended from the six Turkish Angora cats of Queen Marie Antoinette. The story goes that the cats were shipped to the United States with Marie Antoinette when she attempted to escape France during the French Revolution.

They are terrestrial in nature and are very clever. Due to habitat fragmentation, they have now settled in many urban areas of Northern India, where they live in conjugation with humans. This human – animal conflict has been a subject of concern as well as amusement for all. Many photographers and tourists visit these urban cities to study this species of monkey and many television documentaries and shows have also been developed.
