It describes an unnamed peaceful town which falls to ruins after being invaded by a heartless man known as the Hangman. The narrator of the poem describes how the Hangman slowly kills each citizen, one by one, and all the while the narrator is simply a bystander and does not take action. Eventually, the town full of people is reduced to only the narrator. When the Hangman prepares to hang the narrator, the narrator states, “None had stood so alone as I-- / And the Hangman strapped me, and no voice there / Cried “Stay!” for me in the empty square.” Because the narrator had simply stood by and done nothing while others were being hanged, nobody was there for him when he was the one being hanged. The Torah, in Leviticus 19:16, discusses about how people should not “stand idly by while [their] neighbor’s life is in danger.” This passage not only talks about the importance of being an upstander, but also warns about what might happen if someone is not an upstander.
