Almost immediately after ratification, African Americans began to take part in running for office and voting.<br><br>The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying or abridging a citizen's right to vote "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." It was ratified on February 3, 1870, as the third and last of the Reconstruction Amendments. <br><br>The 15th Amendment, which <strong>sought to protect the voting rights of Black men after the Civil War</strong>, was adopted into the U.S. Constitution in 1870. Despite the amendment, within a few years numerous discriminatory practices were used to prevent Black citizens from exercising their right to vote, especially in the South.</div>]]></description>
