a) Select TWO of the choices below, and explain why your two choices best demonstrates the often-hostile attitude toward immigration seen throughout the United States history: frontier theory, immigration quotas, Industrial Revolution, nativism.

1) Nativism a movement of American-born citizens based on hostility toward new immigrants, motivated by ethnic tensions and religious bias. Nativism has been shown throughout American history since the first Industrial Revolution, with the first massive wave of new immigrants.
2) Frontier theory also resulted in very hostile attitudes toward immigrants. Western expansion, especially the construction of railroads, provided many job opportunities for immigrants, specifically Chinese and Irish immigrants. Due to the large numbers of Chinese immigrants entering the country, they soon became the most hated group in the country, made evident by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which prevented any more Chinese immigrants.
The Industrial Revolution also showed hostile attitudes toward immigrants from many factory workers, who resented the immigrants hired by big business owners to replace their workers as a means of combating unions and strikes, since these immigrants would agree to work under the conditions the union members were protesting.

b) Contrast one of your choices against ONE of the other options, demonstrating why that option is not as good as your choice.

The Industrial Revolution is not as sufficient of demonstrating hostile attitudes towards immigrants because big business owners were quick to welcome immigrants and provide them with many job opportunities, as they were willing to work under conditions that American workers were likely to protest.

c) Provide ONE pice of evidence involving one of the choices provided that either supports or contradicts the above statement.

It could also be argued that the Industrial Revolution is a good example of anti-immigrant sentiments in the US because union members grew to strongly dislike immigrants for the same reasons business owners welcomed them; the new immigrants were willing to be hired as a replacement for employees who went on strike to protest their poor wages and working conditions.
