At Spittal there are many aspects of our daily routines which demonstrates a rights based approach.

Children might not be aware of their rights but as skilled practitioners you will be ensuring rights are being met by your actions and words.

When using a rights based approach children are given choice within their nursery life. Children are given the opportunity to develop their independence and have their voice listened to and heard.

Together We Can and We Will Marking Rights Real states that having children will learn about their rights by having concrete experiences of rights being realised throughout their day. This would include

• Free flow play, snack and lunch

• Responsive planning following children's interests

• Children's voice in care plans, target setting, floor books and mind maps.

• Children consulted on their views as part of committees (page 18)

The children's parliament have created a document on children's rights bases on 5 pillars the pillars are

• Relationships, culture and ethos

• Agency

• Awareness and Understanding of Rights

• Importance of you

• Use of Rights Based Language.

Within each of these pillars they have created effective questions which will supported and enhance your understanding of children's rights in the early years.

The children's parliament have created a settings check list to support rights based learning within settings. Although this focuses on birth to 3, all the information can be used to support learning within the 3-5 settings. Like Edinburgh City Council they have lined it to HGIOELC and GIRFEC. They have also linked articles together to show they support different aspects of learning.
