My book is called Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Chains is about a girl named Isabel, and her younger sister Ruth. They are slaves during the Revolutionary War that were sold at a slave auction to Anne and Elihu Lockton, two rich merchants from Britain who live in Manhattan, New York . In their new home, Isabel works in the kitchen and Ruth works as Mrs. Lockton's personal servant. The Locktons are cruel and abuse Isabel, Ruth, and the other slaves that they own by beating and whipping them with Mr. Lockton's leather whip. The girls realize they need to escape, but before they can, the Locktons ship Ruth off to Charleston, South Carolina. Meanwhile, Isabel befriends another slave named Curzon, who is also treated badly by his owner, and together, he and Isabel escape slavery and head out to try to find Ruth.

Slavery
Slavery was a big part of the Revolutionary War. Slaves were purchased at auction, just as Isabel and Ruth were, to work for their masters. Some slaves worked in fields, some worked in restaurants and bars, some took care of children, and some worked around the house as personal servants, maids, and kitchen cooks. Isabel and Ruth were no exception. Most of the slave owners were very cruel to their slaves, just as the Lockton family were to Isabel and Ruth in Chains. Most slaves were not allowed to read or write. Slaves that did not follow their orders were punished. Much like what Isabel and Ruth experienced, most punishments consisted of whipping and hitting. Slavery during the Revolutionary War forbid slaves to have weapons because people were afraid the slaves would use them to fight their own battle, and no punishment could stop that. In 1865, 82 years after the end of the Revolutionary War, slavery was finally abolished, and all of the slaves were free.
