The result of a civil war in Kosovo between the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) on one side and Serbian forces on the other. It is occurring because the Serbians state that Kosovo is the cradle of their civilization. They have many roots there and they have monasteries dating back to medieval times there. They were forced from their homes mostly to camps in Albania. There were also many massacres of Albanians including the Racak "massacre" which occurred on Friday, January 15. Evidence suggests was actually a battle. It can be seen as part of an on-going war in which both sides targeted civilians. The Serbs killed 45, including a 12-year-old boy and two women. They were all unarmed civilians, but there were also 9 KLA men killed at the same time. The Serbs removed their own dead. Many villages formerly occupied by Albanians were also burned. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. It is recognized by about 60 other countries, but it is opposed by Serbia and Russia.
