Mirror Worlds

A dual-world where events in one world (above) have direct, often symbolic, effects on another (below). The two worlds mirror each other but with different contexts.

I have a diploma in Holistic Creative Arts Therapy and I love the concept of using art as therapy.

I like filming things on my phone and taking pictures.

I have life experience.

I also try to follow my intuition, which I believe this concept "As Above, So Below" is related to.

True it is, without falsehood, certain and most certain: that which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above, to accomplish the wonders of a single reality.

As all things were from one, by mediation of a single one, so all things were born from this one reality by a single process of adaptation.Footnote²

Its father is the Sun; its mother the Moon.Footnote³

The Wind carried it in its womb, the Earth is its nurse.

Here is the father of every talisman throughout the whole world.Footnote⁴ Its power is complete.

If it be turned toward earth, it will separate earth from fire, the subtle from the gross.

Smoothly, with great ability, it rises from earth to heaven; again it descends to earth and receives the power of things on high and of things below.

Thus you will possess the glory of the splendor of the world; therefore all darkness will flee from you.

This is the strong strength of all strength, for it conquers every subtle reality and passes through every solid object. In this way, this world was created.

From this source will come wondrous correspondences whose mode of operation is here established.

Thus I was called Hermes, since I have the three parts of the whole world’s wisdom.Footnote⁵

Now what we have said about the operation of the sun is complete.

This artwork was from his Rorschach series. The Rorschach test involved a subject responding to symmetrical ink blot drawings. Their reactions would then be analyzed to understand their personality and emotional functioning.

A pair of eyes

looks back at me.

A nose, two ears,

Two lips, and teeth, to say,

“I love you.”

I look in the mirror

and what do I see?

I look in the mirror

And I see me!

The removal of the mask shows their vulnerability, suggesting that the façade they once upheld is dissolving, mirroring a transformation within. where the mask is being removed, reveals something raw and authentic, symbolizing the “above” (external, perceived self) and the “below” (inner truth).

This imagery conveys the idea that both the mask (the above) and the person behind it (the below) are interconnected and inseparable, much like the balance and mirroring in “As Above, So Below.”

Have you ever felt like you’re hiding behind a mask? Like you’re simply pretending. Pretending to be happy. Pretending to be ok. Pretending to be someone you’re not. Have you ever smiled when you felt sad? Have you ever laughed when anger bubbled inside you? Have you ever been in a crowded room and felt nothing but loneliness?

For me. I look towards art.

It’s where my feelings converge. The artwork I’m painting today is a representation of me. The pained expression of the person’s face in conjunction with the dark colours utilised, depict what I feel to be the ugly side of me. I tend to supress this for the sake of others. It’s a vulnerable thing to express myself this way. But those emotions, no matter how overwhelming or uncomfortable, are ultimately part of who we are. They need space to exist, to be acknowledged, to be felt. In a way, the canvas is a mirror, it reflects the true me. I am raw, I am real, and I realise that what I thought was “ugly” is just human. This is me letting my mask slip. It’s freeing. I feel that it’s not about the perfect image I am presenting to the world, but perhaps that’s the whole point: not to live perfectly, but to live authentically. It’s not about the artwork, its about the process of expression.

As I move onto the white mask, all that pretending floods back to me. The blankness of the mask is a symbol of everything I’ve hidden and everything I’ve covered up to keep the world from seeing the truth. But here in this moment, in this painting and through art as a tool to express myself, I decide to take that mask off. The contrast between the face and the mask is something I focused on in this art piece. It’s a deliberate choice I made to show how the face is alive, carrying the weight of my real feelings, while the mask is merely an empty shell that hides all the pain, anger, and vulnerability beneath it.

As I rinse off the brushes, I feel a sense of cleansing that I am free to express myself.

Just like the phrase as above so below, my inner world reflects my outer world.

8. Slow Motion Shot – The artist’s hand adding texture to the canvas to emphasise the personal symbolism in the art.

9. Medium Shot – Show the therapeutic effect taking place as the artist becomes immersed in the creative process.

10. Close-Up – The artist signs his name in the corner of the painting, to represent closure and completion.

11. Close-Up – The artist cleans his brushes to represent a metaphorical “cleansing” after an emotional experience.
