Droughts have taken their toll during the twentieth century and the early parts of the twenty-first century. Since 1900 droughts have caused the death of more than 11 million people around the world. Another 2 billion have bee affected by droughts. One of the well known drought happened during World War I, !914-1917. Farmers mowed and plowed millions of acres for farmlands. Then a series of rain dried and killed millions of crops. The droughts finally ended in the 1940s. In 2011 in Texas, thousands of square miles were burned by wildfires. Extreme drought conditions started in Texas in 2010.
