The plane crash left a big mark on the island called the scar. Ralph met piggy and went to an open beach with the platform. they found a shell called the conch and Ralph blew on it until the other kids arrived. They voted Ralph the leader and had Simon and jack merridew go with Ralph to explore the island while piggy was left behind with everyone else.  when they came back they made a assembly making rules. One of the youngest boys spoke of a snake beast and it put everyone on edge. After the assembly they decided to make a signal fire on a mountain to try and get rescued. They use piggy's glasses to light it but the fire gets out of control and that one boy with a mulberry birthmark got lost assumed dead. later jack goes hunting while Ralph and Simon  build shelters but the other hunters get tired and go out to swim and play, but jack keeps hunting. jack and Ralph argue because jack wants to go hunting but Ralph needs help on the shelters and that jack didn't catch anything. jack gets a hold of face paint and paints his face thinking it will help hunting, he manages to kill a pig but he let the signal fire go out and while he was out hunting a ship passed by, Ralph then get pissed off at jack. jack got humiliated and hit piggy, breaking one lens of his glasses.  They have another meeting about them being afraid of something, each other. then some younger boys start saying the beast comes from the water or that it was a ghost, frightening everyone even more except piggy which he says you guys are stupid, ending up in a argument with jack. jack decides to leave taking his hunters with him. In the night a air battle happened, having a dead man in a parachute fall,  Sam and Erick find him near the signal fire. Thinking its the beast they run off to tell everyone. Ralph, jack and some others check the one part of the island they haven't checked yet, the castle rock. they didn't find a beast so they head back towards the mountain, but they stop to do some hunting. the boys do a dance that gets pretty violent with one boy pretending to be the pig. They get to the mountain and see the beast and run away in terror. when they get to the beach jack tries voting Ralph out of chief, failing he leaves making his own group saying who ever wants to join him hunt can do so. Ralph and others make a new fire on the beach because the beast is on the mountain. in jacks group, jack kills a pig then puts the head of it on a stake as a offering to the beast. jack goes to Ralph group saying they are having a feast and they can come too. Simon wanders off seeing the decapitated pig head. the head says it is the lord of the flies, then laughs at Simon.  The lord of the flies says the beast is inside the boys and nothing they can hunt and kill, Simon then passes out. Simon then heads to the mountain to see the dead parachute guy and then runs to tell the others there is no beast there. Ralph and piggy join the feast, everyone else already there except Simon, some even joined his tribe. jack makes all the boys do his dance and they chant "kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood" then Simon arrives and gets mistaken for the beast then gets killed by everyone.  that night Ralph's group was left with him, piggy, Sam and Erick. jacks group raid them for piggy's glasses to make fires. the four of them have one last meeting to go confront jacks group and get piggy's specs back. they go to the castle rock where jacks group is, Ralph and jack fight, while roger drops a boulder on piggy's head, killing him, his body is taken by the sea. Sam and Erick is tortured into joining jacks group, Ralph talks to them and they say he is going to be hunted the next day. A major theme in this book is survival. Everyone has to survive living on the island. But more importantly survive living with each other. Piggy and Simon are already dead, Sam and Erick got tortured, roger was throwing rocks at Henry.
