Why Infanticide Is A Problem In Senegal?

 

Woman accused of infanticide were interviewed in the prisons of Thies, Senegal. Infanticide is the 2nd most common reason women in Senegal are in prison. In Senegal, infanticide is a response to taboo pregnancies, carried out by isolated women. Experts believe the strict laws surrounding abortion are a contributing factor. Three of the women interviewed commented on their experiences, of which one baby was thrown into a septic tank after birth and survived, one baby was still born and buried in the garden, due to the mother being a single parent shortly after the father died, and being the sole breadwinner. One woman lied that her baby was still born, after an affair and claimed the man put a spell on her to seduce her, shortly after the body of the child was found in a septic tank. 

The father said he wanted the order lifted so he could talk openly about his lost daughter, who had “just disappeared”.
He also wants to raise much-needed funds for the surviving twin, he told the court in a statement.
The twins’ father, who was not present at two previous court hearings because he was at hospital appointments with his daughter, cried as the mother was sentenced to a community corrections order for one year.

A body of a newborn girl child was found in the Kadipur industrial area. 
According to police, around 9am a Dhanawas village resident found a polythene bag near the garbage in the street. He also noticed a dog sniffing at the bag. When he took a closer look at the bag, he found a newly born and called the police. Police arrived and took the body of the baby girl in custody and sent it to the mortuary 

Five-week-old Amelia Lilly Sultan-Curtis died in hospital after a single blow to the head on 7 October 2012.

Her mother Natasha Sultan, 21, of Hull, was due to stand trial for murder but admitted the lesser charge of infanticide at the city's crown court.

Sentencing judge Jeremy Richardson QC said she was an "utterly broken woman".

He added: "For the remainder of your life you will have to live with the fact that you killed your six-week-old daughter. That burden will never be lifted."

A woman who was jailed for murdering her newborn baby with a pair of scissors has begun an appeal against her conviction.

Rachel Tunstill, 26, killed Mia Kelly soon after giving birth to her in the bathroom of her flat in Burnley.

Tunstill denied murder but was convicted by a jury at Preston Crown Court in June 2017 and jailed for life.

Her lawyers told the Court of Appeal, the jury should have had the option of convicting her of infanticide.

Before the killing care worker Tunstill, who has a degree in psychology and a masters in forensic psychology, asked her partner of nine years to hand her the scissors.

At the time he had no idea she had just given birth, the court heard, and handed her the scissors through the bathroom door.
