In the first stanza of the poem he compares life without dreams which can conclude too meaning pointless or a waste of time to a broken winged bird, I think he meant this comparison as any broken winged bird cannot fly , if a BIRD cannot fly then what is the purpose for the bird to live? If you have a life with no dreams, what is the point of life? Meanwhile in the second stanza he compares it to " A barren field frozen with snow." The switch from a broken winged bird to a frozen field can show how it felt to be alive during the Harlem Renaissance with no dreams, during this time black artists, singers, dancers, and many more were hardly given any attention. "Hold fast to dreams" can mean many things but I think it means to never let go of your dreams because when you do life can go downhill for you and you no longer have purpose.
