If one goal is completely different from the other goal or one is not looking at the needs of the student, there will be a disconnect with the instruction. The instruction and tools trying to be implemented in the classroom may not be effective. The students may feel that disconnect and the growth may not be as strong. It can also cause issues with the teacher and make them feel as though they are doing a lot more work which can hurt the buy-in from the teacher.

Alignment of all 3 ensures coaching leads to meaningful improvement in student learning that lasts beyond the coaching cycle. When these goals are connected, coaching supports what teachers are actually teaching! It ensures that we are targeting the specific knowledge and skills students are expected to learn. This prevents coaching from feeling like something that is being completed as compliance. Instead, aligning these 3 elements makes coaching conversations purposeful, meaningful and relevant. Hopefully the results will lead to stronger instruction and higher levels of learning for students.

We need to understand what the teachers' instructional goals are based on student needs first. We then need to understand what the curriculum/content goals are so that we can create a direct coaching goal. We will need student data so that we can analyze where the need is. If we can understand what they goal of the teacher's goal is, the curriculum goals, and use student data to help us pinpoint the needs, we can then formulate our coaching goal that is targeted to hit the areas of need. There are many moving parts, and we do not want the teacher to feel as though they are doing something wrong. We have to understand that connecting all of these, we can create an overall goal that is connected to the needs of both the teacher and the students.
