Young Adult Literature has the potential to be explicitly taught in schools. Teachers may create and supplement their existing curriculum to support the mastery of academic standards. Gibbons, Dail, and Stallworth (2006) state, "As teachers, let’s give students material to read that is relevant to them and then use that to meet all of the standards and assessment objectives in today’s classroom. With creativity, passion, and planning, it can be done, as this small sample of teachers demonstrates." The odds of Haddix's work being used in a classroom is about 50/50! It all depends on the teacher and their flexibility to integrate it.
Gibbons, L.C., Dail, J.S., and Stallworth, B.J.
