Armenians had their own language, culture, and religion which sometimes made them seem outsiders to the rest of the Muslim empire. At a certain point, Armenians wanted to become independent as nationalists feelings grew. "During the 1890s, Ottoman troops killed tens of thousands of Armenians." (pg.419) When war broke out in 1914, the Ottomans claimed that the Armenians were supportive of the Triple Entente, the opposite side of the Ottomans. The Ottoman Empires government deproted 2 million people and took claim to their land. While on their journey out of the empire, more than 600,00 were killed or died of starvation. On October 2, 1968, the Mexican Armed Forces opened fire on a crowd of unarmed civilians protesting the forthcoming 1968 Summer Olympics in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco neighborhood of Mexico City. Although government papers made available since 2000 suggest that snipers had been used by the government, the Mexican government and media insisted that the Armed Forces had been provoked by demonstrators shooting at them. It is unclear how many people died as a result of the incident. However, estimates of the real death toll range from 300 to 400, with eyewitnesses reporting hundreds dead. The U.S. national security archives recorded the deaths of 44 persons. In addition, the Federal Directorate of Security's director said that 1,345 persons had been detained.
