The sounds seamlessly blend into one another, making it difficult to focus on a single music source. Devotees busy themselves with prayers as well as preparations to take up their kavadis or paalkudams (milk pots). As you walk through the crowd, you catch snippets of conversation amongst people code-switching easily between English and Tamil. Some talk about their kavadi preparations, some catch up with old friends and others get to know new ones. Amidst these conversations, you hear a live band playing not too far away from you. Barely audible over the live bands, recorded music plays from speakers mounted against the temple’s pillars.

Smell:Sweat
