It's also different because in the first battle it is between him and Grendel without any armor or weapons, he was not fighting for any kind of reward nor was helped, he trusted in God’s help and giving him strength. In the second battle he fought Grendel’s mother in armor and with a sword and Hrothgar promised treasure as a reward if he won this battle. He prepared himself with this protection of his armor. He was helped by God and his armor.

Beowulf’s second battle is different from the first because after he had killed the enemy, he was still very angry and seeked revenge. During the second battle, Beowulf was almost defeated until he regained his strength and ended up killing Grendel’s mom.

For the second battle, Beowulf put on his armour and used the sword that Unferth gave to him.

Beowulf was given a sword that could help defeat Grendel’s mother because the sword that was given to him from Unferth did not work against her.
