Luke, Offred’s fiancé: The father of her child. Never heard from in the story. Supposedly dead(maybe).

Offred’s daughter: She is still alive. Don’t know anything about her

Cora: Martha, Nice, caring

Rita: Rude. Judge mental

The commander: Weird. Old man.

The wife: Dislikes Offred. Rude.

Oflgen: Part of the rebellion. Quiet.

The eyes: Spy’s.

Handmaids: Meant to use their bodies as a place to breed new life for others. They resist? They die.

Martha’s: Maids.

The commanders wives: The wives of the commanders.

The aunts: Oversee the handmaids and any other problems that involve woman. Highest authority a woman can have.

This book takes place in a nation called "Gilead". Gilead was once known as the United States, but that was before they abolished the constitution. The government was entirely torn down. Then rebuilt. into what is now Gilead. Gilead is a religious nation. They live in colonies. Women are meant to be wives and breeders. The people say its "gods will". Young girls are raised to be perfect housewives and taught that they must marry and bear children.

This book is very interesting, if you like dystopian books I would recommend reading The Handmaids Tale. It’s very sad at some points, but there’s suspense and danger in other parts. The main character goes through so much in the short few years she was there.

Offred is the main character of this story. Offred is a handmaid in the country of gillead. Offred along with many other woman. We’re forced into rolls. Like handmaids, Martha’s, aunts. Offred is an interesting character as she changes so much throughout the story.
