This quote is important because it shows that you can overcome prejudice. Justyce is offering to hang out so he can overcome the rivalry between them. He knows that the hate can’t last forever and he wants to get over this prejudice. Jared wants to overcome the hate as well and he wants to be better. Jared says he would love to go on a trip to New York because that is the first step to overcome their rivalry. This talk at the cemetery is an example of how to overcome prejudice.

Justyces’ joy is shattered by doubt because of Trey’s response, saying that Justyce will never be accepted as someone talented and that he belongs at the bottom where trey also feels he belongs because he has presumably experienced something life changing making him wallow about his problems instead of fixing them and dragging down others who try to be better. This makes Justyce worry that him being accepted was just a fluke and that he doesn’t deserve to succeed.

Often in Interracial relationships family and friends will judge the relationship because they don’t agree with the ideas. It can damage it, especially if the people in the couple value their family's opinion. This can be seen in the example in Dear Martin. Justyce put off telling his mom about SJ because he values her and her opinion. It is damaging how SJ and him get into the relationship. Another example is from a news article that was from the view of a black woman. She started dating a Swedish guy and his family judged her because she was black and did not approve of the relationship.

This is important because it shows that Jus has good intentions and genuinely wants to do the right thing. He recognizes that the world is not as innocent as it once seemed and he needs to make a change in his own life to accommodate for that. The night before, Jus got arrested by a white cop because at first glance Jus looked “suspicious'”. The cop didn't let Justyce explain the situation at all and went straight to violence and aggression. As a result of that night, he gets the idea to start writing to MLK. The reason he chooses Martin is because Martin is very well known for his peaceful approach to every situation he faced. After witnessing the violence that was displayed by the cop that arrested him, Justyce realizes that he never wants to act like that and instead wants to be like MLK.

This quote represents a common fears and worries among black teens, the fear of being mistaken as a bad person and getting hurt, the fear for their friends and family's lives, the fear of them or someone they care about getting a higher penalty that a white person whether their innocent or not and by extension the fear of being falsely accused of something and everyone choosing to believe the person accusing them simply because of their race. They constantly face racial bias on a daily basis and according to a study published by the journal of applied developmental psychology when examining how often black teens experience racial discrimination every day they surveyed 101 black teens between the ages 13-17 as they went about their daily lives for two weeks, reporting 5,600 experiences of racial discrimination total, on average more than 5 experiences a day with each experience causing a short term increase in depressive symptoms. Examples of discrimination include teasing by peers, experiencing jokes about their race, and seeing a loved one treated poorly because of race or ethnicity. Their poorer than average living conditions and communities affect their mental health.

This quote shows that it is important that Justyce went to Manny’s grave because it gave him an opportunity to talk with Jared. He saw him at Manny’s grave and he did not want to go but he knew Manny would want him there. While at the grave Justyce and Jared had a conversation. They discovered they had more in common than they thought. They made a connection and formed a new relationship.

This is similar to what many Asian kids are taught: one day, someone will come up and ask, "The question."

That question is, "Where do you come from?" It seems chill at first, but they really just want to know what kind of Asian we are. This is a problem because they don't immediately see us as Americans. So most of our parents tell us to say America first and then our own country to show that we are as American as anyone else. Many parents who want to protect their children will teach them information like this to protect them from situations and dangers their parents know they will one day have to face.

This is important because it displays how hypocritical it is for Justyce’s mother to be so disapproving of S.J just because of her skin color. Justyce is mad at his mom because after he has been discriminated against for his skin color for so long she does the same to S.J. Justyce thinks what she is doing is the same as the cop who was putting Justyce in handcuffs just because he was black. This quote is also an example of how Justyce is pressured by his mother because of the relationship he has with S.J. Justyce’s mom obviously wants the best for Justyce and cares for him, she is just misguided in her beliefs. Luckily, Justyce did not take his mothers advice and decided to date S.J. anyways. Now imagine if Justyce took his mothers advice and didn’t date S.J. Imagine if he told Sarah Jane “I won’t date you because my mother told me not to.” Doing this could seriously affect his relationship with his mother and S.J., who was already his friend. Perchance stopping him and S.J. from being friends at all.

This is a pretty extreme example of someone who is incredibly uneducated and ignorant to what they are saying. Jared quoting MLK, using him to try and explain how black people are equal now is an incredibly ironic thing to do. Jared being this incredibly ignorant is obviously hurting those around him. This shows how when people of different races come together, uneducated on each other's history, things can get pretty bad pretty quick.

This quote is important because it showed the first time Justice realized that even if he tries his best to be an honest and respectable person he can still fall victim to racial profiling, which is really awful. After this happened Justyce really changed his views because he realized that even if it's supposed to be illegal to discriminate, that doesn't mean it won't happen. He started writing to MLK because of this experience, to try and face this stuff like he did. But in the end Justyce has to figure out for himself how he is going to manage when his character is being challenged and when he is facing racism in his world.

This quote is important because it makes them closer and also strengthens their friendship. It is extremely awkward because they used to be enemies.

Also, it was the first time they shared their grief of losing their friend Manny. They both had a great connection of expressing how they feel and Justyce letting Jared speak freely and acknowledging their lost.

These quotes are important because they show a similar naive belief that both Jared and Justyce share. Though Jared appears to be the only that believes that racism no longer exists in America and despite Justyce constantly thinking badly on Jared’s belief, Justyce at the beginning of the story also had a similar belief. He believed that racism only happens to threatening people and would not happen to someone like him which got slapped out of him at the start of the story. The only reason that Jared didn’t also have a realization is because he wasn’t affected by racism until after Manny's death which then allowed Jared to see how bad racism actually was.
