Through scaffolding, teachers can reach students’ zone of proximal development. This basically means that by offering little help to students, they can learn or do things that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own.
It is important not to try to get students to do things that are out of reach.
For example, when baking a cake, a child can get the ingredients needed on their own with no help [current understanding]. But with the help of another person they can measure the correct amounts and mixed all the ingredients together [zone of proximal development]. However, when it comes to using the oven , the child cannot learn how to use it even with help of another because it is out of their reach.

Vygotsky says, “In play a child is always above his average age, above his
daily behavior; in play it is as though he were a head taller than himself. As in
the focus of a magnifying glass, play contains all developmental tendencies in a condensed form; in play it is as though the child were trying to jump above the level of his normal behavior” (1967, 16).

Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development believes that children could transform external information through language. Vygotsky thinks that children talk to themselves when they play so that they could make sense of the world. Through the play process, children are more capable in using language and regulating their thought process.
