"No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act."

In Book 2 chapter 5 the character Winston Smith is going on about the acts of Rebellion he and Julia had committed. In the world that these characters live in, the women are brainwashed from a young age, that the only reason have sex with your husband should not be out of lust or attraction, but should only be done for the purpose of reproduction. The only reason for sex is because it is their "duty to the party" Julia describes the reason sex is not supposed to be an emotional thing in their committee is because "When you make love you're using up energy: and afterwards you don't give a damn for anyone." This is why the inner party has brainwashed party members to believe sex is not an act of enjoyment.
For this reason, while Julia and Winston finally get an opportunity to have sex, they don't believe it was an act of lust or desire, but an act to rebel against the party.

"It's the one thing they can't do. They can make you say anything - anything - but they can't make you believe it. They can't get inside you."

Throughout the book 1984, the character Winston reveals more and more about the way Oceania works. There is the inner party, which is basically the government type people, then there is the party, which is all the regular citizens. From the time they are young, they are taught and taught certain ways of living their lives. As you grow up the things that they teach start to become a habit. Since they re controlling of everything that is happening the inner party believes that they can control not only the actions of the party, but also the thoughts of each party member, which usually is correct.

In this quote Winston believes that through all the teachings the party does, they can never truly be inside your mind and control the way that people think. It represents the way that his mind works versus other party members in which the book states they are usually in the state of mind the inner party wants them to be in.

In this moment, the characters Winston and Julia are in a hide out where there are no telescreens or microphones. They have all the attraction of having sex, but stop for a moment when Winston begins to ask Julia if it is something she is used to, she says yes, many times. This is when Winston assures that he likes her less pure.
The reason for this is because in Oceania, the Women are taught that it is better to be pure. Winston wants to go against what the inner party thinks. Julia does not in any way believe that purity is better. Because of this Winston is even more attracted to Julia

This can be related to "it's the thought that matters" as Winston admits that the only thing that makes them free would be their emotions and the feelings that they decide to feel. Winston implies that his actions are not as strong as his emotions and that is what truly matters.

The proles are the working class of Oceania which means that Winston believes that hope must lie within the prole because they are the largest group that can take down the Party. Orwell adds this quote in order to relate to the small groups of people who feel like they can not do much but don't realize that their strength lies within their numbers.

Here Winston is believing that if 2 + 2=4 then all the rest of the changed truth has been modified to fit the needs of the party. The party only tells people what they want them to think what the truth is because they want to keep the people in control. Therefore if Winston believes what he had told himself he can only keep the truth inside his mind and can't share it with anyone else or he would get caught with the thought police

The note that was given to Winston was by a women whom he thought she was part of the thought police. After the note was given to him he didn't know what to think and decided that he would meet with the girl. This act of wanting to reach out to the girl would have been very risky and could cause himself to be vaporized. Simply the words that were written on the paper could cause huge problem because for someone to fall in love someone else who isn't your husband or wife could lead to consequences. The party only wants you to view sex as something that only should be viewed as the duty of the party and nothing else, with no warm emotions attached.
