Logo Design Challenge: "Digital Hearts"

Group Task: In your international teams of 6, you will collaboratively design a logo for our eTwinning project, "Digital Hearts: Staying Human in a Virtual World." You will then present your logo, explaining the choices you made.

Goal: To create a visual identity that instantly communicates the core themes of our project: technology, humanity, connection, and emotion.

Logo Design Criteria & Rubric

Your logo will be evaluated based on the following four criteria. Use this as your checklist during the design process.

1. Concept & Relevance to the Project Theme (Weight: 40%)

This is the most important part. Your logo must tell our project's story.

• Core Message: Does the logo clearly represent the idea of "Staying Human in a Virtual World"?

• Dual Elements: Does it creatively combine symbols of the digital/technological world (e.g., pixels, Wi-Fi symbols, apps, circuits) with symbols of humanity/emotion (e.g., heart, hand, brain, people connecting, globe)?

• Positive Spin: Does the design convey a sense of hope, connection, and positivity rather than fear or isolation regarding technology?

• Explanation: Can you clearly articulate why you chose specific images and how they connect to the project.

Questions for your group:

• What does "staying human" mean to us? How can we draw that?

• What is a "digital heart"? Is it a heart made of code? A heart connecting people via lines?

2. Visual Design & Creativity (Weight: 30%)

Your logo must be well-designed and original.

• Simplicity: Is it clean and not overly complicated? A good logo should be recognizable even when small.

• Color Choice: Do the colors have meaning? (e.g., Blue for trust/technology, green for growth, red/yellow for passion/energy, a mix to represent different countries). Is the color palette harmonious?

• Typography: If you include text (like "Digital Hearts"), is the font easy to read and does it match the style of the logo? Is the project title integrated well?

• Originality: Is the design unique and creative, not just a copy of existing logos?

3. Collaboration & Multinational Spirit (Weight: 15%)

This project is about international teamwork. Your process should reflect that.

• Inclusive Process: Did every member of your international group contribute ideas? Can you describe how you combined different perspectives?

• Cross-Cultural Elements: Did you consider incorporating subtle elements that represent your diverse cultures? (This could be in color symbolism, a pattern, or a shared symbol of connection).

• Team Explanation: Is your group prepared to explain the design as a team, with each member describing a part they contributed to or feel connected to?

4. Technical Execution & Presentation (Weight: 15%)

How well did you use the tools and present your final product?

• Digital Tool Proficiency: Did you effectively use a digital design tool (e.g., Canva, AI Image Generator, Adobe Express, Piktochart, or even Google Drawings)?

• Clarity of Presentation: Is your final logo file high quality and clear?

• Justification: Is your written or spoken explanation clear, well-structured, and does it convincingly justify your design choices using the criteria above?

The Process: Step-by-Step

1. Brainstorm (Individually & as a Group):

-Individually, sketch 2-3 ideas based on the criteria.

-As a group, share your sketches on a video call or in a shared document (like a Google Jamboard). Discuss what you like about each idea.

-Keyword Storm: Together, list words from the project: Heart, Connection, Digital, Virtual, Human, Empathy, Globe, Link, Network, Pulse, etc.

2. Design & Create (Collaboratively):

-Choose one or two of the strongest ideas to develop further.

-Use your chosen digital tool. You can have one "lead" designer sharing their screen, or create different versions and vote.

-Experiment with colors, shapes, and layout!

3. Prepare Your Explanation (As a Team):

You must submit your logo with a short explanation (150-200 words). This can be a written paragraph in your group's shared TwinSpace forum, OR a short (2-minute max) video presentation using Flipgrid where each person says a sentence.

4. Your explanation MUST answer these questions:

-What are the main elements of our logo? (Describe it).

-Why did we choose these specific images, shapes, and colors? How do they represent the "Digital Hearts" theme?

-How does our logo show the connection between technology and humanity?

-How did our international team work together to create this final design?

Objectives
•To enable students to recognize their emotional experiences when using the internet.
•To develop digital citizenship and empathy skills.
•To analyze the positive and negative impacts of the internet.
•To enhance collaborative work and digital tool usage skills.
•To design an original logo through teamwork.
•To reinforce collaboration by working on a shared digital board with a "World Kindness Day" theme, enriched by individual reflections.

Activity Steps and Timeline
Week 1: 

Emotional Exploration, Scenario Selection & Logo Ideas

•Activity Introduction: The teacher introduces the "Our Empathy Map" activity and its objectives to the 6 teams.

•Scenario Selection: The teacher shares 6 different scenarios. Each team reviews these scenarios and selects one that interests them or that they find important. Teams can choose the same scenario.

•Scenario Options: Kindness in Online Games, Social Media Bullying, Spread of Misinformation, Cyber Security Breach, Interaction in Online Lessons, The Power and Responsibility of Anonymity.

•Creating an Empathy Map: Each student notes down moments where they felt happy, sad, or angry while browsing, playing games, or communicating online. Teams collect these emotional experiences on a shared "Empathy Map" using an online brainstorming tool (e.g., Padlet, Jamboard).

•Logo Brainstorming and Initial Drafts: Each team generates ideas for their own logo based on their chosen scenario and the general objectives of the activity. The logo should reflect empathy, digital kindness, or well-being on the internet. Teams begin designing their logos and create initial drafts using simple online design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Spark Post).

Week 2: 

Logo Development, Selection & Individual Digital Board Contributions

•Logo Design and In-Team Selection: Teams develop their logo drafts. Each team chooses their favorite design and prepares a short text (50-100 words) explaining how the chosen logo reflects the project's goals and their scenario.

•Individual Reflection and Digital Board Contribution Ideas: Each student prepares an individual reflection, combining their impressions and feelings from the activity (Empathy Map, scenario discussions) with the theme of "Kindness on the Internet." This reflection can be a text, a short drawing, a slogan, or a brief audio recording.

•Contributing to the Digital Board: Students begin adding their individual reflections to the collaborative digital board themed around World Kindness Day (e.g., Padlet, Wakelet). The teacher should have prepared the board in advance for student contributions.

•Logo Contest Preparation: The selected logos and their explanatory texts from all teams are collected by the teacher and prepared for voting on a common platform (e.g., Google Forms survey, a gallery on TwinSpace).

Let’s celebrate the New Year together! Below is a link to a calendar template. Each of our schools can choose one month to design and showcase their own country and culture. This could turn into a wonderful cultural festival!!!

This activity helps students discover similarities and differences across European cultures while building connections with their international peers.

Activity Overview

Students create a short presentation (2-3 minutes) sharing ONE meaningful tradition or cultural aspect from their country/region. The key is depth over breadth - one tradition explored well rather than many shown superficially.

Format Options (Students Choose)

1. Video Presentation

• Record themselves explaining and demonstrating the tradition

• Include family members or friends if relevant

• Show real objects, foods, clothing, or locations

• Example: Making a traditional recipe with grandma, celebrating a local festival

2. Digital Cartoon/Comic Strip

• Use tools like Canva, Pixton, or Storyboard That

• 4-6 panels showing the tradition step-by-step

• Add speech bubbles and captions in English

• Example: How families celebrate name days in Greece

3. Photo Story

• 5-8 photos with captions telling the story

• Can use PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Adobe Spark

• Include personal photos or create staged scenes

• Example: A photo journey through preparing for Midsummer in Sweden

4. Mini Documentary

• Interview family members about why the tradition matters

• Show the tradition in action in their community

• Example: Asking grandparents about carnival traditions

5. Interactive Presentation

• Create a Padlet or digital poster

• Include images, short video clips, music, and text

• Add a quiz question at the end for other students

Suggested Tradition Categories

• Celebrations: Holidays, festivals, family gatherings

• Food Culture: Special dishes, meal traditions, food preparation

• Music & Dance: Traditional songs, instruments, dances

• Crafts & Arts: Local handicrafts, folk art, traditional games

• Daily Life: Greetings, customs, superstitions, etiquette

• Regional Pride: Local legends, historical traditions, regional clothing

Structure Guide

Each presentation should include:

1. Introduction (20 seconds): "Hello! I'm [name] from [city, country]"

2. The Tradition (1-2 minutes): What is it? When/how is it celebrated?

3. Personal Connection (30 seconds): Why does this matter to you/your family?

4. Question for Others (10 seconds): Pose one question to other students about similar traditions in their countries.  You must choose another student from another country.

The main characters of the play:

• Romeo Montague - Foolish modern day girls clamor for a modern day Romeo. They dream of Romeo’s wooing words (Act I, scene v, lines 43-52 and II, ii, 1-25) and ignore his utter lack of manly qualities: his lusts are fleeting and portable (I, i, 176-96) as shown by his initial love for Rosaline immediately followed by his love for Juliet (II, iv, 65-80); his desire to kill himself whenever things do not go as planned (III, iii, 103-09); his womanish ways (III, iii, 108-113); and his selfishness in ultimately killing himself. In short, if you want a man engulfed by infatuation for whom you’ll need a restraining order soon, if you want a man who falls to the floor and cries when things don’t go his way, if you want a man who does not think before he acts, and if you want a man who quits when things aren’t going well, then Romeo is the man for you.

• Juliet Capulet - Putting Romeo’s name first in the title is ironic, for Juliet is by far the stronger of the two. She is abandoned by her family, beaten by her father (III, v, 161-8), betrayed by the Nurse (III, v, 215-227), led into folly by a fool Friar (IV, i, 68-76), and married to a sissy (see above). She forged ahead, faced fears, defied social customs, and went against the words of her parents. Upon seeing Romeo’s dead body, she realized her life was worthless.

•  

• The Nurse - Juliet’s closest confidant is privy to Juliet’s deception and encourages her fling with Romeo. She arranges the marriage meeting and the subsequent honeymoon activities (II, iv, 150-195). She goes to Romeo after he murders Tybalt to arrange matters again (III, iii, 159-175). The nurse, however, abandons Juliet in her most dire need. Initially, Juliet needed wisdom and her nurturer failed to give it.

• Mercutio - Mercutio’s wit makes him one of Shakespeare’s more memorable characters. He blames Romeo for his death and curses the Montagues and Capulets for their misdeeds (III, i, 99-102). A closer look reveals the opposite to be true. Romeo is not responsible for Mercutio’s death. Mercutio is. He understands the likelihood of a brawl that day (III, i, 1-0) yet encourages violence when Tybalt arrives. Furthermore, Mercutio is a kinsman of the prince and should carry out the peaceful wishes of the prince. Mercutio’s actions cause his own death, Tybalt’s death, and ultimately, Romeo and Juliet’s death.

• Friar Lawrence - As an ecclesiastical leader, Friar Lawrence is expected to counsel in wisdom. Instead he counsels in folly. He marries Romeo and Juliet. He concocts a ridiculous plan that fakes Juliet’s death. He delegates the delivery of a critically important letter to an underling (V, iii, 5-16). And he abandons Juliet immediately after she finds a dead Romeo (V, iii, 150-9).
