One thing I've always wanted to do is allow my students to talk and discuss with me in a very informal manner. I feel like a lot of things that we want to be brought up, will be brought up naturally if you allow students the freedom to talk about what they want. Maybe set aside 30 minutes every Friday for discussion. Kids would be building social skills and bringing their own view points to the table. Some views that don't fit in an academic setting might be well suited to be discussed when the floor is open.

It all has to start with creating a tight knit community within your classroom. Before you can discuss tough topics like race it is important to build the right environment for it. Giving students the opportunity to share who they are and feel connected with their fellow students can help them feel comfortable with sharing. I would recommend assignments that allow the students to share who they are in an artistic way. Once you feel like the community is there you can start leading discussions around these important but difficult topics.

One activity that comes to mind is to hold a padlet or similar activity where each student writes their own identity. With that information, the teacher can draw a circle that contains each identity in the classroom. Then, for part 2, students can name different identities or cultures, these will be written outside the circle. These represent the cultures outside of the classroom. Now, draw a large circle that encompasses all previous writing. This is our world, and WE ARE ALL A PART OF IT and deserve recognition and acceptance.
