During this 35-year long period, the Soviet Union not only dominated, but transcended the sport of hockey. Led by "The Father of Russian Ice Hockey", coach Anatoli Tarasov, the Soviets changed the game by emphasizing, teamwork, speed, and possession, while producing some of the world's best players. The Soviets managed to produce and sustain this success through the "Red Army" model, where the players were part of the Soviet army, allowing the state to control the players in terms of their rigorous training, diet, and schedules. Players were forbidden from seeing their families for up to 10 months at a time. The Soviets were wildly successful during this era, winning 21 of 32 World Hockey Championships, including 9 in a row in the 60s. They also won 8 out of 10 Olympic Gold Medals during the period.

Since the end of Soviet dominance, the question of Europe's top hockey nation is still contested. Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Czechia have lead the way, each winning multiple major competitions such as the Olympics, World Championships, and World Junior Championships. These nations have also produced some of the world's best players of the 21st century. While the title of Europe's premier hockey nation is still up in the air, the result 2026 Olympics in Milan will have a significant impact on this debate.

During this 26-year period, European nations were developing their hockey programs and national teams, but saw little international success. While hockey trophies in Europe were rare, some nations had success on the international stage, as Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, and the Soviet Union each won a world championship before 1955.
