No these motives and causes were not harmless because maybe even if they weren't intended to they ended up killing thousand of people, taking more for slaves, and stealing spices and gold. They were the opposite of harmless and many diseases that they brought over ravaged the country for years. The explorer knew what they were doing when they started exploring and were just greedy taking spices, gold, and people for slaves from the places that they were going to. They knew their adventures were going to be deadly to everyone around. They also went to countries and wanted to try to force their own religion on the other people that were not their religion.

After the battle ended the native people had surrendered and brought Cortes and his men many jewels. The city itself is as big as Seville or Córdoba. The main streets are very wide and very straight; some of these are on the land, but the rest and all the smaller ones are half on land, half canals where they paddle their canoes. There are, in all districts of this great city, many temples or houses for their idols.

The Aztecs led Cortes and his men to the heart of the city where they met Montezuma, King of the Aztecs. He showered them with gifts of exotic food, jewelry, and gold. However, word of the massacre committed earlier by Cortes had reached Tenochtitlan. Many feared the Spanish and believed they were giving shelter to a sleeping monster. The Aztecs confused Cortes for a God, and so they treated him and his soldiers well. However, Cortés was afraid that the Aztecs might soon figure out that he was not indeed their god and try to remove him from the their city. In a bold move Cortes took Montezuma hostage and asked for a huge ransom of gold and jewels. Riots broke out in the city and the Aztecs finally drove Cortes and his men out of their city in March of 1520.

The Spanish massacred hundreds of the Aztecs and laid waste to their city, looting and pillaging as they went. Unable to do anything against the Spanish, Montezuma abandoned the city. The conquistadors went street to street, home to home, burning and stealing anything they could find. Smallpox quickly ran through the city killing thousands. The Aztecs attempted to save their city, but after 80 days of violence the Aztec royalty surrendered to Cortes. They claimed the land for Spain and built what is now today Mexico City upon the ruins of Tenochtitlan.

Did Cortes embody the human spirit of exploration and acquisition of knowledge? No he did not, because if he did he would not have fought the battles, he would have not burned the ships, he wouldn't have took Montezuma hostage, he wouldn't have looted Tenochtitlan, he wouldn't have burned Tenochtitlan, he wouldn't have destroyed what was left and built his own city on it, he would have went there bonded with the people and came there peacefully and tried to get as much knowledge as he and his men could fit into their brains. Cortes should have tried to traded with the people instead of stealing and killing them. He should have tried to connect the country instead of trying to make them his own. He could have done anything other then the things he did and it would have been okay.

I think that the age of exploration was more of an invasion because there were so many lives native lives that were lost because of nothing. Also the people that came to these native land stole everything they could get their hands on and burned city's and destroyed whole tribes of people that did nothing to them. The people that were exploring the native land were nothing but greedy and I think that should be known. As well as the people took many people for slaves and imprisoned many more. The native people didn't deserve any of this for just living their lives, they were peaceful people that shouldn't have been disturbed.
