One thing Mrs. Oden wished that she could do more of is hands-on projects such as stem or problem based learning. She explained that she cannot do more of these projects as a result of supplies costs and a lack of funding. She hopes to one day receive the funding to implement these projects because she believes that it is easier for her students to understand concepts when they can see a model or build it themselves.

What can I do as a future teacher to support the special education students that will be in my classroom?

Mrs. Oden stated that one of the most important things you can do as a future teacher is to keep communication open between the parents and the special ed teacher. She hopes that teachers realize that behaviors are serving a need, look for the need the behavior fills. And find more appropriate ways to fill that need. That students can learn the content. She also explained that she feels strongly about teachers not lowering their expectations for, and making sure their accommodations in their IEP are followed. She explains that with all of these things, as well as a teachers love, patience and being firm is how they will succeed in any general education environment.

What made you want to teach special education?

Mrs. Oden has always felt a need to help others and help them succeed. Her first career was in accounting, and she worked in this career for 13 years. After 8 years in this profession, she took a break and worked in a private day schools for children with autism as a teacher’s assistant. It was during this time that she realized she really enjoyed working with children. Unfortunately, the school she worked at eventually closed and left education and went back to accounting. Though she was very successful in the accounting business, she thoroughly missed working with kids. Some years later when her son was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent 13 months of chemo at the age of 2, she knew at that point that he would probably need special education services at some point. As a result, she again left her accounting job and went back to school to become a special education teacher. She explains her decision as being "two-fold". "First, I saw other parents with my son’s condition fight the education system to get their children services. I wanted to know my rights and what my son would qualify for. The second reason was because I didn’t want other parents to feel lost or alone as I had seen so many parents feel. Having a child with special needs or long-term medical needs is draining and emotional. And then having to navigate the education system can be burdensome, frustrating, etc. I could relate to these parents on some level and could let them know, that I knew what they were going through and truly meant it. I wanted to become a champion for their children. To help them reach their full potential regardless of what level that was. Everyone can learn. . . EVERYONE! It just looks different."

I was honored to observe Mrs. Brittney Oden in her special education classroom at Summit Academy Junior High School in Mesa Arizona. This observation took place in the second hour of the school day around 10:12 am. After Mrs. Oden's second hour period, I conducted my interview during her prep hour. the interview consisted of the following three questions: "What can i do as a future educator to support the special education students that will be in my classroom?", "What would you like to do in your classroom, but due to time or finances, you are not able to do?", and "What made you want to teach special education?"

During the observations, Mrs. Oden was helping a student solve the equations: 1 - 5. The student struggled with the concept of negative numbers and though Mrs. Oden provided different strategies for the student to solve the problem, he was still confused. It wasn't until Mrs. Oden had him stand on the number line she had made out of tape on the floor and walk back 5 numbers on the number line starting at 1; resulting in the student being able to solve the problem. During these observations of Mrs. Oden working with her students I learned that you need to be more patient and understanding when it comes to teaching students with disabilities.

She is an active member of the National Association of Special Education Teachers and frequently updates herself via their Facebook page. She is also an active member of the Special Education Teachers group sponsored by NASET. This group is more of a hands on support group where members join in discussions, help each other out, share ideas, etc.
