Navigation using the stars is important, because it is sort of like a lifestyle for some cultures, and is also very important to some cultures. Navigation using the stars has been replaced by more modern way finding tools, but not all the time will you will have a modern device that will help you navigate on ships. Navigation using the stars is also important because it can help you not rely on the more modern way finding tools to get you somewhere. Navigation using the stars is also important, because there is a lot of history with people using the stars for navigation, and people that have been using this way finding technique generations ago would possibly want the technique passed down. One example of star navigation is using a star compass. Another example of star navigation is reading the wave currents. Star navigation is not just using the stars.

Star maps and navigational techniques are important for travel efficiency implications of ancient times as well as cultural implications of possible future times. Back when Hawaii was not illegally annexed into America there were no "modern" technology to guide Hawaiians from place to place. The stars were a very clear way to find ones destination and location without western navigational tools. Another reason way finding by stars is so important is because of the cultural implications. Hawaiians and Polynesian navigators honor traditions of the past in order to keep the integrity of a society. Similar to what happened to Kapu a cultural rule system, star way finding was eventually dismissed as inefficient. Kapu was replaced by western rule books during early Annexation. Star way finding was replaced with compasses and maps. Though Hokule'a in its mission to revive Polynesian and Hawaiian culture decided to navigate via the stars. Bringing ancient traditions to the forefront of Hawaiian morals.

Traditional navigation Techniques are very important for efficiently travelling when other navigation items/tools aren't available. This also helps them save time searching for the tools. The second reason is for culture. It is to honor navigators of the past that used to use these techniques.

For ancient Hawaiians the only way to keep track of where you are and going was the stars. Over the years technology has simplified navigation so some may see a star map as unnecessary. Though, its not about the method's efficiency it is about connecting with past. Over the years Hawaiian culture has been dwindling, but if we can learn this ancient art we are ever more close to reviving it.

One of the reasons why navigation using the stars is important because, if you are lost in the middle of the sea you can use the stars to help guide you to land. The north star is one of the most important stars. The reason the North Star is so important for natural navigation is that it sits directly over the North Pole. Wherever you are in the northern hemisphere, the North Star will be the same angle above the horizon as your latitude. This was how the ancient Hawaiians used to travel and navigate themselves to their destination. Another example of why star navigation is important is by observing the position of stars in the sky, you can find your bearing in unfamiliar waters and navigate strange seas. Star navigation has been used by seafarers for centuries and is a useful skill for any boater to know.

I think that navigation with the stars is a good way to travel. From this way of travel, it is bringing back the past such as the Hokulea. These people wanted to travel with no electronics, only with themselves. So they needed a way to tell where they are going, they found a man named Mau. He help the travelers go from Hawaii to Tahiti. He taught the people to use the stars to navigate, he decided to help these people because he wants the culture of navigating to live on. Without it then we would forget the old ways and rely too much on modern technology to help us. I think navigation with the stars is important to learn because, if you were to take a boat to sea and something happens to the boat then, you would be stranded. If you were to take a canoe to sail with then you would get exercise and not get stranded. So it is good not to rely on modern technology too much, and appreciate the simple ways.

But what if you don't have any of these, what if the motorboat breaks in the middle of the ocean? What if you lose the compass along the way? It was tradition to use the stars in Hawaii, now that times have changed many forget about their traditions. Back then there wasn't any of the modern devices we have today.

Navigating with the stars while voyages was very helpful to Hawaiians while traveling on voyages, because they didn't have any technology or map to help them tell which way to go. Hawaiians used a very unique way of finding different islands it was quite impressive. For example today people use the compass or maps on their phones and early Hawaiians couldn't. Also it was a stressful voyage imagine the water tide, but today it's much easy. For example they make sturdy ships now.

It is also important because without navigation the Hawaiians wouldn't have been able to find new lands as they voyaged. Navigation is also important because if you have no maps, compasses, or etc, you can use the stars and the current of the sea to help you. There are also not many navigators left so if you learn how to navigate the tradition could still be passed on throughout the culture.
