Priscilla and the Pink Planet

This was my favorite book from as young as I can remember, and one of the first books I'd read by myself. The book, in short, is about a girl named Priscilla who lives on a planet where everything is pink, and she goes on a quest to seek out new, exciting colors. This book introduced me to reading and made it an enjoyable experience.

Rainbow Magic Books

The Rainbow Magic Fairy Books were my favorite series in third grade. My favorite collection was the jewel collection, pictured below, and my favorite of those books was Lucy the Diamond Fairy. These books influenced me to explore writing in the genre of Fantasy. I wrote a fictional story for my 3rd Grade writing workshop based on the series, titled Priscilla and the Pearl. I accredit this book series for sparking my passion in writing.

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas By: John Boyne

This book had a very strong emotional impact on me, as prior to this, I had limited knowledge of the Holocaust. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas tells a story of the Holocaust in an eye-witness, more personable perspective. Reading it in this way, versus reading historical facts or nonfiction about the Holocaust, humanized the event, in turn helping me unpack and begin to process the tragic event in history in a more personal sense.

Brave New World By: Aldous Huxley

This book had been my favorite assigned reading of freshman year. I loved the way the author turned the stereotypical image of the future filled with technology into something more dystopian and dark than what others make it out to be. The ideas of the caste system, hatcheries, and soma are all concepts that could be on the way for the future. Even in the time this book was written, early 1930s, Huxley was still able to see that technology will eventually override the human race, and something struck me about that.

milk and honey by: Rupi Kaur

Milk and Honey had a strong impact on my life during the summer after freshman year. This was the first poetry book I'd ever read by my own choice. Rupi talks a lot about issues for women, within families, within relationships, within society, etc, which I resonated with at that time and continue to resonate with. Her style of writing inspired me to try writing prose, and I've found now that it's my favorite style of writing.

the sun and her flowers by: Rupi Kaur

After reading Milk and Honey, I was excited to read Rupi's second published book, called The Sun and Her Flowers. This book focusses heavily on five main ideas, these being wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming. This book helped me to accept the place I was at in that time, and kept me hopeful of the rising and blooming.
