The kingdom of Ghana arose out of the relatively small 4th century agro-pastoral settlements in the region known as Awkar.

Between 300 - 1200 C.E.
Northern Ghana bordered on the Sahara, a center for the salt and gold trade.

They served as regulators of the salt trade for the north, gold for the south.
