      <description>After completing his medical degree at Madras Medical College in India, Dr. Hemanth Rao of Charlotte, NC, undertook his postdoctoral training in the United States. He finished an internship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Elmhurst Hospital Center and subsequently spent several years as a resident at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Hemanth Rao then completed an EMG neuromuscular disease fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine.

Following the completion of his training, Dr. Rao spent one year practicing in Louisiana at the Green Clinic before relocating to Charlotte, NC, where he founded the Neurological Institute. He continues to serve as the company’s president and CEO, in addition to running United Sleep Medicine. 

Dr. Rao maintains membership with the American Academy of Neurology and is board certified by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also a dedicated clinical researcher, who has worked on dozens of studies over the years.

Dr. Hemanth Rao of Charlotte, NC, has developed in-depth knowledge of many diseases, including <a href="http://www.myasthenia.org/">myasthenia gravis</a>.<br><br>Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the neuromuscular system. It develops due to an interruption in nerve signaling at the neuromuscular junction, where the nerves relay messages to the muscles.&nbsp;<br><br>In a healthy nervous system, a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine bridges the neuromuscular synapse and attaches to receptors in the muscles. This activates the receptors and prompts the muscle to contract. In a patient with myasthenia gravis, however, antibodies change or destroy the receptors in the muscle and prevent normal muscle contraction.<br><br>A patient with this condition typically experiences abnormal levels of muscle weakness and fatigue, most often during exertion. The muscles involved in eye movement are often the first affected, although some patients initially notice changes in facial expression, difficulty swallowing, or slurred speech as the first signs.&nbsp;<br><br>Some patients with myasthenia gravis experience only localized symptoms, such as those affecting the face or limbs, while others show more universal signs. In these patients, the muscles that control breathing may be affected.</div>]]></description>

In this role, Dr. Hemanth Rao leverages almost three decades of experience to help patients who have neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Three <a href="http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Symptoms-Diagnosis/MS-Symptoms">common symptoms</a> of MS include:<br><br>1. <strong>Issues with vision</strong>. People with MS often experience optic nerve inflammation that leads to blurred or double vision and, in some cases, complete loss of vision. Currently the president and CEO of the Neurological Institute in Charlotte, Dr. Hemanth Rao has participated in clinical studies that investigate <a href="http://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/Types-of-MS">multiple sclerosis</a> (MS) and similar neurological conditions. <br><br>Medical professionals classify MS into four types, each of which is characterized by a slightly differing disease progression. The four types of MS are:<br><br>1. <strong>Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).</strong> The most common form of MS, RRMS is characterized by temporary periods of flare-ups, relapses, and recovery. Most people who have MS are given this diagnosis at first. <br><br>2. <strong>Secondary-progressive MS (SPMS)</strong>. In this type of MS, symptoms become progressively worse over time. Periods of relapse and remission may still occur, but the overall trend is toward more severe symptoms. It is normal for people with an RRMS diagnosis to eventually transition to SPMS.<br><br>3. <strong>Primary-progressive MS (PPMS). </strong>This rare type of MS is like SPMS, but occurs without any periodic relapses or remissions. <br><br>4. <strong>Progressive-relapsing MS (PRMS).</strong> This is the least-common form of MS. Patients with PRMS experience steadily worsening conditions and acute relapses. They do not ever experience periods of remission in this severe form of MS.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dr. Hemanth Rao of Charlotte, NC, has served as the president and CEO of the Neurological Institute since 1996 and in 2013 became the medical director of neurology for Carolina's ContinueCare. In his medical career in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Hemanth Rao has focused particularly on topics such as <a href="https://www.nature.com/subjects/neuroimmunology">neuroimmunology</a>.<br><br>A term dating back to the 1960s, neuroimmunology refers to the study of the interactions between the immune system and the central nervous system. Although normal function of the immune system includes protection of the nervous system, sometimes malfunctions in the immune system can lead to neurological issues.<br><br>For example, autoimmune conditions may result when the immune system becomes activated against the neurological system and begins attacking the nerves in the body, spinal cord, or brain as if they were foreign invaders. These conditions include multiple sclerosis, myasthenia Gravis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, transverse myelitis, and optic neuritis.<br><br>As neuroimmunology continues to develop, researchers discover more areas where the immune system may lead to neurodegenerative diseases.
