This picture is a postcard of Welch, where the Walls family decided to live while Jeannette was still in highschool and where her life would stay if she never decides to do anything about it. The quote, "The first was that I'd had my last whipping. No one was ever going to do that to me again. The second was that, like Lori, I was going to get out of Welch. The sooner, the better. Before I finished high school, if I could. I had no idea where I would go, but I did know I was going. I also knew it would not be easy. People got stuck in Welch." This is an example of, acceptance can help you find who you truly want to be, because after Jeannette realising that her parents would rather have internal conflicts than find ways to help their children, Jeannette accepts the fact that if she wants to do something she has to do it herself and has to become the best version of herself and decides to follow her dreams like her sister Lori to New York.

This picture of a hospital bed represents the time when Rex was in the hospital because of the fact he was dying. The quote "A year after Dad died, I left Eric. He was a good man, but not the right one for me. And Park Avenue was not where i belonged." This is an example of forgive is always needed to grow because after Jeannette spends time with her dad and subconsciously forgiving him for what he has done and seeing him in that position she realises that she doesn't want a life that she has built but instead a life that her father would have approved of, living in the wilderness with her family.

The photo shows the time when the Walls family were in the Desert in California living in poverty and with many cats to accompany them and their feces to sleep next to, the quote, "Six months later Maureen stabbed Mom... Maureen couldn't bear the idea that her own mom would kick her out onto the street," supports the idea of chaos leading to more chaos in the future. This picture shows that the family had a very troubling and desperate beginning but this didn't stop the children from building their own future and foundations for their lives. But on the other side this chaos for Maureen specifically made her mental illness worse and this chaos led to her parents not helping her find the help she needed and eventually led to violence, i.e a stabbing of their own mother. Maureen then later, after leaving the mental institute, decides to never see her parents again and move somewhere far from them.

This picture represents the event when Rex decides to sober up after Jeannette decides to ask him if he can stop drinking on her birthday. The quote, "THREE DAYS LATER, while Lori and I were sitting at Grandma's old upright piano trying to teach each other to play, we heard heavy, uneven footsteps at the front door. We turned and saw Dad. He tripped on the coffee table. When we tried to help him, he cursed and lurched at us, swinging his fist. He wanted to know where that goddamn sorry-assed mother of ours was." This is an example of disappointments are everywhere because even after Rex Walls decides to go through with being sober for Jeannette he still finds a way to start drinking again and even after presenting his sober life to Jeannette as a gift. This shows the disappointment he always brings to his own children and wife. Also when he decides to deny stealing his own children's money for trying to escape their old life and saying that his children are being stolen by Lori after she leaves. Rex has many ways throughout the memoir that disappoints everyone. But also the living conditions that the family had to endure would be a disappointment to someone if they had a long time to try to fix it instead of being an alcoholic and not caring for one's children.

This photo of the Barnard College campus represents the time when Jeannette decides to attend that college to further her career in journalism. In chapter 4 Jeannette has a debate/conversation on why she should go to college with her boss Mike, "Why should I give up this job to go to college? I asked. "You've got college graduates working here who are doing what I'm doing." "You may not believe this," he said, "but there are better jobs out there than the one you've got now. You might get one of them one of these days. But not without a college degree degree." Mike promised me that if I went to college, i could come back to "The Phoenix" anytime I wanted. But, he added, he didn't think I would." This quote shows that an education is so important for her career and her future that even her own boss who will lose an excellent employee suggests that she should apply and attend a college for her degree.

This picture represents the apartment that Lori shared renting with Jeannette after Jeannette decides to leave Welch. They also decide to share the apartment with Brian and eventually other family member including Maureen, Rex and Rose Mary. The quote, "I called him at grandpa's and presented my case. He'd need to get a job to pay his share of the rent and groceries, I said, but jobs were going begging in the city. He could share the living room with me-there was plenty of space for a second bed-the toilet flushed, and the ceiling never leaked. When I finished, Brian was silent for a moment. Then he said, "When's the soonest I can come?" This is an example of one not being solely self-sufficient because the children helped each other become who they wanted to be, Lori was given the chance to go to New York by Jeannette and Lori helped Jeannette get an apartment together in New York. Lori and Jeannette both helped Brian go to New York as well, they all helped each other leave their past in Welch and embrace their future in New York. One cannot be solely self-sufficient but needs help from others in order to grow and become strong enough to support themselves.
